by selling my soul on ebay

my parents are paying full.
But they will get very ****ed off if I dont get into a 'bigname' university because they think it's a waste of $40k (US) for me to live and learn in a 'no name' university.

I don't really think they'll pay at all for a 'no name' university. They'll make me go to a uni here, and that will kill me! The fees here are really really cheap. Many students get a loan from a bank and after graduating, they run away to another country..lol
And there's this other university in the south which is free..

Also, sorry for sidetracking but, when they say $29,000 tution fee, is it for one year?

ya it for 1 yr. but alot of schools give financial aid to the best internationals. and even great scholarships. full tuition, some even cover all expenses and giv an allowance. jus look around for them

Financial aid rules my life :D

It's really hard to get full scholarships especially for internationals. You have to be the best of the best.

My dad is paying full.

what colleges that you guys are applying to give aid to international students?

If I don't get into my super-reach top school -in which case my parents will be quite happy lend me the fees for zero interest- I'll have to go wherever they offer me scholarship, even if it's a no-name university. But then, I figured, who cares about names anyway? In the long run everything depends on how much you learn, and how much you LET yourself enjoy it.
Starting to sound like a typical ivy-reject but who gives a damn!

boomer01, thats not exactly true, i had a friend who got 1340 and got a full schol to morehouse, but then who wants to go to morehouse? too many men!!! i need my ladies

Apparently, you don't know that Spelman (an all women's school is right across the street and Morehouse is part of the Atlanta college consortium in addition to having exchange programs at Columbia, Dartmouth and Williams to name a few)

In the event you were looking for a job in the U.S. more Corporate recruiters recruit for blacks from Morehouse, Howard and Spelman, than trying to find them at Harvard, Yale Princeton because they acan go straight to the source.

Most internationals go for the big-name schools and it's hard to get scholarship for those. Any international who is above average and has 1300+ on their SAT can get a full scholarship to University of Central Arkansas- the podunk (BTW, I just made that up).

I'm in the exact same situation, NoFX, my parents worked really hard to save up for the killer $40k (US) tuition fees and I can only use that money for an Ivy, that said, since I most probably won't get in that Ivy I will probably study in a country where tuition fees are relatively cheaper which I don't mind really, coz then I can choose any course I want!!! :D

Hey, I think if the school charges you $40k, it won't be a no name :D Well, my life depends solely on financial aid. My parents can contribute only about $2k. I'm a real no money kid. But the good thing is that if I'm rejected, I can always attribute it to my fiancial aspect, not my academic one :D :D

oh im so depressed after seeing all this. i thought my family was quite well-off, but it turns out to be wrong!! crap... i'm definitely depending on a scholarship or financial aid, but if don't get those probably will borrow money from the bank or something.

Anyone know of any loans international students can get? I have a co-singner in the US but would prefer to use one from my home country.

if you want to borrow from a U.S bank, you must use your co-signer in the U.S.

It all depends on financial aid and scholarships for me. My parents also only want me to either go to big-name unis in the US or go local. Given that I am not regionally, nationally or internationally 'distinguished'. I am guessing I'll be going local.

As for loans, perhaps it may be better in the long term to go to a local university instead of building up a huge debt that you will have to work off as soon as you finish university, $160k (assuming $40k a year) is a pretty big sum considering that you will only get paid about $40k a year when you first graduate.

I wasn't planning on getting a loan, but I thought it might be a good idea that if I have an interview to get a visa that I could show that If anything unexpected happened with my finances I could cover it with a loan.
