How do you respond to people asking about where you applied?

For a variety of reasons, I really don't feel comfortable when people ask me this (though prbly b/c I'll get rejected everywhere, lol). I try to brush off the questions, tell people I don't know, etc., but some people just really gotta know! And I'm bad at telling people to get off my back. Peers, parents, people I don't even know, they all seem to have to know where I applied. Does anyone else feel this way, and what do you tell people?

I respond by naming all of the schools in Minnesota that I applied to, and sometimes I say "and a few out east."

I know how you feel Karl. For some people I just said "Oh, you know, here and there." If they persisted, I would list UMD (state school), Penn (dad's alma mater), and Cornell (lots of kids from my school apply here). If I'm talking to someone in college and I'm looking at their school, I will list it too.

I'll usually just say "oh, a bunch of small LACS..."

When I was asked...I usually just said "the UC's"....I never elaborated on which ones though

I just tell people...I guess I've never felt like it was a secret or anything. Pretty much all my friends know Caltech's been my dream school for life. :/

Truthfully -- in alphabetical order so people won't think I'm listing them in order of preference.

I answered with all of them for a while... but no one had ever heard of them. so I stopped.

people here only go to one of three schools... Indiana U, Purdue or Ball State.
The have no idea what a LAC is.

I usually tell them just around about 4 - none of them are recognised as much as HYP (Rochester, CMU, etc...), so they usually go... "Oh? I haven't heard of them" And i'd say, "Yeah... where are you applying to?". And they usually get all excited and so my part stops there!

i just said a few colleges and that im unsure about any others. i would feel more comfortable telling someone where i applied if i got accepted into the college first.

You should reply with a firm "WHAT IS IT TO YOU?" and sternly stare them down, the a holes. How dare they care to ask a question?

Some problems REALLY aren't problems are they?

It's easier for me to just say "I don't know yet" because I'm just a junior. But if I have to say something, I just give the abbreviations and usually it doesn't register with them what schools it actually is. (RIT, UofM, UMassD, etc...)

i know how you feel...i usually end up making excuses about why i applied to each one..."it's my sister's school," "most financially feasible," et cetera...

S&J--and hey, some of us HAVE heard of RIT and happen to love it! :)

Why is it such a big deal, though? I don't have a problem telling people where I've applied, even though my list may seem a bit presumptuous (a few Ivies, a few top LACs, all privates, all top 25), and I certainly don't feel I have to justify myself to anyone... why would it be a problem? I'm not trying to criticize anyone's choices; I just don't understand why.

I just tell them straight up.

I tell them all but Vanderbilt because it's such a ridiculous reach that I'd rather avoid the stares.

BTW...what schools are you guys applying to? I read your names a lot on this college board...fizix, VeganActress, camelia, etc...but I have no idea where you guys are appying.

I'm applying to Amherst, Bryn Mawr, U of Chicago, Dartmouth, Macalester, Middlebury, Princeton, Swarthmore, Wellesley, and Williams. My last-resort safety is Uppsala University in Sweden, but I'm only applying there if I don't get in (or don't get enough aid) anywhere else.

zel -- I love it too (It's currently at the top of my list) but at a private catholic school in Connecticut that is swarming with people who embody the definition of prep...it's pretty safe to say most of them haven't heard of it.

I only applied to Caltech. When I tell people that they look at me funny and say something about Caltech parties being <sarcasm>really</sarcasm> great.

you only applied to one school? wow, you must be very confident.
