How do you show it on your app?

How does an applicant show the Admission committee that he is really interested in Dartmouth? :D

Well I cant possibly ask them to visit the D forum on CC ;)

Apply early.

Well I assume you are new to the D forum :p I will apply early come what may! :)

Haha, well then maybe contact a professor in the area you're interested in? Maybe he'll pass along your interest? Then again, all students who apply early to Dartmouth are reallllly interested in going there; otherwise, they wouldn't apply early!

I am an International student :) So meeting professors is out of question. Applying early shows interest? Well what if I say I am even ready to major in creative gum chewing if Dartmouth accepts me? :D

ajay,

Even if you can't meet a professor face to face, I found the professors to be very, very approachable even via email. It's one of the things that makes Dartmouth as a relatively small undergraduate institution better than its larger counterparts - professors are almost entirely devoted to undergraduates, at least in my experience. In fact, the responsiveness and amiability of the professors I contacted before I visited Hanover was a major reason why I chose Dartmouth over other schools.

I went to the site for the department I'm interested in and contacted the "Undergraduate Advisor." I just asked him a few questions that about the program that I was genuinely interested in knowing the answer to. He invited me to his office, offered to give me a tour of the place, was extremely accommodating, etc. It was great.

Even if nothing substantive comes of your talk with a professor, at least in your application you will have the chance to reference the fact that a correspondence actually took place, and maybe you will even learn of a program or class specific to Dartmouth that will make your compatibility with the school even more apparent to an adcom.

Ah nice to hear to that nai. But from my experience I have never received a reply from the Dartmouth administration via email. I will see if the Professors respond. :) Thanks for the info.

I always got a very speedy response from them. Almost in an hour usually. Maybe two at the worst. I'm still debating UPenn or Dartmouth. I can't really visit Hanover. It's far.

Good for you. What happened to Brown? Changed your mind again?

any other views people?

Talk to the head of the alumni group in your area and let them know your interest. They host a meeting each fall for new pplicants to speak w/ alumni.
However - I agree w/ apply early. I didn't but then wished I had afterwards. Luckily - I was accepted regular decision - but applicant odds are higher early decision - but some of that might be because of recruited students, atheletes etc as well. If you have a special area of interest or an extracurricular you willpursue at Dartmouth - write about it as their might be a need for someone w/ thos equalities to round out the student body. For example - if you excel at tennis, debate, have one essay about that interest. Also talk to your teachers writing your recommendation - maybe one of them wil custom a letter to Dartmouth as your first choice. I also heard the peer letter is important. Let your personality come across in what you write.

What type of questions did you ask them nai (and others)? I would hate to email a professor and find that my question was pretty stupid. :P

Ajayc,

Just direct the adcom to the link on CC with all your Dartmouth posts? ;)

Balletgirl

^ haha

Well I would have done that but I am still in denial of some of my posts on other forums here ;)

Anyone of you might want to write an extra rec. about CC for me? :D

I don't think Dartmouth even takes interest into consideration...

Applying early is probably your best bet though.

What do you mean?

I'm saying that Dartmouth doesn't take the applicant's level of interest in the College into consideration when it comes to admissions....

I've seen this somewhere before. If I can find the source, I'll give you the link.

Ah I get it. That weird. They don't want a student who would be a wonderful alumni?

Of course they do. But Dartmouth admissions just works this way. I don't know why they do it, but they do.

=/

I find it interesting that the Dartmouth application offers so little opportunity for the applicant to show interest, or to showcase his writing, for that matter. For example, comparing the D supplement to the Yale supplement to the common app, the app doesn't open the door to much writing or specific reference to Dartmouth, while Yale asks for an extra essay and has the classic "why Yale" question.

Does anyone care to speculate about what this tells us about the D selection process? Does it come down to numbers, at the end of the day?

ajayc: best of luck on the SAT!!
