how do you start the "college search"

hey guys so although this may seem a little naive im just wondering how exactly you start the college search process. Like i have schools in mind but I dont know much about them... im just kinda thinking that they are good schools based on their prestige--- which i know isn't the right way to go.

so how do you start researching colleges and find the ones that fit you well?

One of the best things to do is visit the college. By doing this, you are able to formulate your own interpretations. However, while you are there, you can always ask a few students some questions and learn more about the school from the students themselves.

Start out by asking yourself how far you’re willing to go: commuting distance, in state, neighboring state, or really far away.

If you have even a general idea of what you’re planning on studying, focus only on schools that offer related majors, then create a list of safeties, matches, and reaches.

Obviously many more personal factors go into this such as prestige/rankings, size, demographics, crime rate, food, dorm size, etc.

[College MatchMaker - Type of School](<a href=“College Search - BigFuture | College Board”>College Search - BigFuture | College Board)

Really good at narrowing down schools for you :).

Once you have an idea of the type of school you’d like, the college search and selection forum on here will help you as well.

Good luck!

You can also talk to friends if they’ve visited colleges and see what they think.

And the colleges’ websites are good for info and finding out tour dates, if you have some schools in mind.

I would go to collegeboard and start doing the college matchmaker tool, it not only gives you the idea what colleges to you want to go but tips on how you will search one.
