How do you study

i remember seeing that quote in some economics book about teaching…

^ while the numbers are a bit different for everyone, it’s really true. Says my mom, a teacher. And my personal experience, too.
You learn by explaining? Well that’s the same as teaching. ;-)

Google Cal Newport - that’s the guy with the Quiz&Recall idea. He is my hero!

I rarely study, unless it’s like memorizing vocab or something. If that’s the case, then I’ll make flash cards or write it down repetitively.

i heard this idea and thought it was interesting (would only work for a history, language or science, probably not math):
pretend the teacher said you could use a notecard on the test. cram everything you would put on there on the notecard, and study from that the whole day. then, when the test comes, put the notecard away.

Maybe this is just me, but the absolute best thing for me to do is pay attention in class. No, I can’t remember every little thing without the aid of notes, but I spend most of my time looking at the teacher while he/she talks rather than mindlessly taking notes. This works in history, english, math… Then I usually cross-reference the material with the textbook, and if it’s difficult, I “teach” it to a friend and we bounce the material off one another until it clicks.

But, seriously, pay attention. It’s the most important thing.

You guys study?
Holy crap, I just pay attention in class and get 5’s.

ummmm i sleep through class and read the book the day before the test and get A’s, worked so far

This is so so true. The numbers, obviously, vary from person to person though. I’ve worked as a private tutor for over a year now, and the subjects and material that I teach has become SO firmly embedded in my head that I feel I could never forget it. Lol.

Lol, speaking of never forgetting things, mnemonics are killer! I still remember so many obscure things that I committed to memory using them. The most recent being a cruel demonstration our psych teacher played on us a little while ago, forever etching 5 objects into our brains. They are:

Keys
Banjo
Soccer Ball
Mustache
Rave

Memorized by:
One- Run - Horse running with a set of keys in its mouth
Two - Zoo - Monkey swinging on a vine playing a banjo
Three - Tree - Soccer balls hanging from trees
Four - door - A mustache lodged in a revolving door (and preventing it from moving) in a hotel in NYC
Five - Hive - A bunch of bees waiting outside a beehive because a rave, you see, is currently taking place inside

I am fully confident that my terminal breath will be used in quoting these things verbatim.
