How do you tackle this type of CR question?

hello alll,
for CR, how do you tackle a question along the lines of:

In line X, the word "...." most nearly means:

A)
B)
C)
D)
E)

What is the best strategy for tackling these questions and getting them right, since I always seem to slip up on one of these types of questions (along with 1 SC, usually I have no clue about the word lol) that keep me from getting a perfect on the CR sections ahhhhhhh!

Thanks,

Regards

Generally surrounding that word there are clues to what the author meant by using that word. Pick the word that best relates to the authors purpose of the sentence/paragraph.

If you have no idea what the word means then eliminate those you do know and then guess.

If you mean what I think you mean; I usually sub in the word choices.

Quick tip: In most cases, the most common definition of the word is not the answer (seems stupid but standardized tests can do strange things to people).
Other than that get a feel of the mood and tone of the passage as well as looking at the surrounding sentences.

The strategy I use is to try to put my own word in the blank BEFORE looking at choices. Then I disregard anything off the wall and try the 2-3 that are left until I find the right one.
