how do you tell people you're going to Cornell...

...without sounding like you're bragging?

My daughter went through that when she was accepted to another Ivy League school. She felt like she was bragging even though she was answering the question people had asked.

I think you should say you are attending Cornell in the fall and that you recognize your good fortune to have been accepted in a very difficult admissions year.

does cornell get that much respect in your area that you feel like youre bragging? an acceptance at cornell gets under-appreciated in my area because of the less-than-intelligent people that get accepted into the Ag school. some people consider our state flagship to be better than cornell.

^^^ ummhh 10 char

You say "Cornell"

At my school, it's not really bragging. People are just like "Oh cool." or "nice."
We do have a few students who got accepted to HYP, so Cornell seems like nothing.

the conversation usually goes something like this"

"where are you going to college"
"Cornell"

Someone: Where are you going to college?
Me: Cornell...How about you?
Someone: State Uni X
Me: Hahaha....Too bad you couldn't go to Cornell
Someone: Ummm...okay
Me: Thank god I was blessed with an extremely high IQ....I definitely could've gone to Harvard if I applied, but it seemed too elitist for me
Someone: Well congrats I guess
Me: Yep, I know, I'm so freakin awesome...I mean you definitely wouldn't of gotten in if you applied. They only accept the best of the best. Since your going to State Uni X, your clearly no where near being in my class
Someone: I'm going to leave now
Me: Why?!? You think you're too good for a Cornellian or something?
Someone: No
Me: Good, cause if anything I'm too good for you. Just remember that I'm going to Corn-freakin-ell. Its an ivy-league school by the way. Well I probably shouldn't talk to a non-Cornellian, bye.

^^ Well said.

MadeinChina, I like that approach. But I think it's too modest. You're going to Cornell!!! Don't be afraid to brag a little!

Interesting... When I say I'm going to Cornell, most people have replied, "Why?", because they think Cornell is a suicide school.

^^ That is so true. My friends just make fun of me. Seriously, they don't stop.

"Don't kill yourself sweetie!"
"Learn how to swim and avoid gorges."

My fave: "Did you know Cornell has the highest suicide rate, like ever, OMG!"

Yah....I would say about 75% of the time the reaction is more "why would you choose to go there? doesn't everybody kill themselves?" or "ooohhh cooollllldddd". Another 20% of the time its just "nice, great job" or "wow, good school" and then the last 5% have never heard of Cornell. I keep a running tally. I would most definitely not say you should feel embarassed to say you are going to Cornell because you are afraid of bragging, just prepare to defend your mental health.

Ehh...I think for me it's more of the

"Where are you going next year?"
"Cornell?...Where's that again?"
"Ohhh New York!"

YouTube - Cornell The Office Reference

Haha so true! Everyone I've told gives 1 of four responses

OMG OMG Cornell? That's awesome! I'm so happy for you! (My favorite response)

Don't forget your jacket! It's Antarctica up there! (Like I don't know that - I've done my research)

Don't they have a high suicide rate? Don't jump off a gorge! (Haha very funny. And their suicide rate is LOWER than the national average.)

What's Cornell? (Seriously, more than one person has asked me this. I know it's considered the "lowest" ivy, but still)

to address the post above this one, plenty of people don't know what cornell is. Not everyone cares about a million different colleges. Cornell is extremely highly respected by academics and professionals and is very well known of throughout the world as far as colleges go, but that doesn't mean that every person recognizes the name, especially people who aren't college educated, or aren't from the northeast.

To the original post, just say you're going to Cornell. I also feel uncomfortable at times depending who I'm talking to (I don't come from a Ivy-feeder high school or town, so attending private college is rare). But just say it, and don't act weird about it. lol.

hpmbs - I realize not everyone's going to know about Cornell, but I'm talking about seniors at a competitive New Jersey public high school who applied to at least one Ivy not knowing about it. That's kind of strange, don't you think?

Try living in California and see the response... Was it Cornell or Colgate??? Wow, you'll freeze... Is that an Ivy League school? What school did you say, Cornell, where is that?? And a few INFORMED people say, WOW!! GOOD FOR YOU!!!

Lol my class name is 12 CORNELL but only 4 people in the class seemed to know where it is. GOD help these kids. HAHA
