Hello everyone! So, my intended major at Stern is finance with a minor in theater production at Tisch.
Now, I do not have any "background" with business, unfortunately. In fact, I haven't had any opportunity to have any "background." In any case, I've still taken the toughest classes I can, got a 33 on my ACT, and am involved with activities I love.
But, (this is my question) this summer, I was chosen to participate in the NJ Governor's School in the Sciences. It's a highly prestigious program that I am attending. People who have attended it that I know went to schools like UPenn and Cornell. Now, is this going to look, dare I say, bad on a Stern resume? Because it's a science related summer activity, rather than a business related one? Do you think that the application committee would not be happy with choosing to participate in a science program rather than a business one?
Your help would be highly appreciated!

It looks good. It is useful to show some business inclination in your EC’s, but having an excellent science summer experience will not hurt you, and in fact, it might make you look a little bit more rounded.

Thanks! I just really want to get into Stern, and I do have a deep interest in finance. But this summer opportunity is something I can’t pass up!

that’s a pretty prestigious program. Only two people in my school got in and they are basically amongst the top 10 kids in our class. So it won’t look bad, everything doesn’t have to be business related.

Okay, I just really want to go to stern so im hoping that my ecs still pull me through.

I think as long as your weighted GPA is in the 4.0-4.3 range you should be fine with a 33 ACT score.

Yeah, my weighted is much higher than that. More around a 4.65, because Ive never gotten a B.

Staryulover - You seem to have it all together, haha. ACT, GPA, EC’s. Now, you just need good essay and it’s a match for you. IMO

Yo with those stats you could probably attempt Wharton. You won’t be a lock by any stretch of the imagination, but you’re profile totally dominates the averages for Stern. I sometimes wonder why people with 4.65 GPA’s come onto the NYU forum and start freaking out. People people people…

I’m very worried because I saw all of the students that were rejected this year, and I’m afraid I will be too, especially because of the caliber of students that apply to schools like Stern. Also, I really love NYU, so I really would like the opportunity to go there. I know my scores are above average for NYU, but Stern is a completely different area, isn’t it?

I agree with fireman - you’re completely qualified for Stern. Don’t worry, because you’re a match and barring any unforeseen screwups you’re in. Yeah, and try for Wharton too, if you want. You would be competitive.

Stern’s a completely different area, but it’s not just as hard to get into HYP as it is to get into Stern. Several of my new classmates that I’ve talked to don’t have amazing stats - solid, but not amazing. Schools they were also accepted too include the realm of Emory, Georgetown, and Northwestern. So yeah, not HYP level but not bad at all.

Stop freaking out and go watch a movie, buddy. YOU’RE FINE, SERIOUSLY.
