How do you transfer from a UC to a Cal State in bad standing?

Hi there,

I had a quick question. I attended a UC for about 4 years and on my last year my GPA dropped and I left the university in bad standing. It's been 2 years since I stopped attending the UC and I want to continue my education in a Cal State. The only obstacle in my way is that one of the requirements for transfer students is that you must have left the previous university in good standing. How do I go about fixing this so that I can apply to the Cal State? PLEASE HELP!!! Many thanks in advanced!! =)

The first thing you need to do is contact the UC where you left from. There is no other way you can transfer to most universities before correcting the issues with the UC you attended!

You might need to petition for readmission. The registrar’s office at that UC will be able to help you out.

Were you academically disqualified and forced by the UC to leave or did you simply drop out voluntarily with a GPA of less than 2.0 which would have put you in bad standing? If it is the latter case, as victor5555 suggested, you could go back to your UC, seek reinstatement, take some very easy courses to get your GPA to a level where you are in good standing and then attempt to transfer to a CSU. Even if you become eligible to apply to a CSU it may be difficult to get accepted into one. CSUs have had a large increase in applications recently while they have had to reduce enrollment due to budget cuts and are unlikely to accept a transfer student with a GPA in the 2.0 range, even if they are in good standing with their former school.

If you were asked to leave by your former UC I really do not know what you can do. I understand there is something called “Academic Renewal” which supposedly gives students who have had poor grades in the past a clean slate but I don’t really know anything about it or whether or not it could help you.
