How do your H.S. juniors/seniors keep a paying job?

experience also helps you with future jobs.. for example, when i started my last two jobs, i didn't have to be trained on everything because i already knew a lot of it from previous jobs. when i started doing this job with the harley stores, it was sort of disorganized and i've came up with new ways to do things and have taken care of inventories and ordering and all sorts of things, and our business has literally doubled since i started working there. it's amazing what experience can do for a company.

my boss took us out for a company dinner and to a comedy show, saying how great of a job we have been doing, how all of our customers are happy and are returning and buying even more, and how we're really helping out the company with what we've contributed.

I think what she means is that you can't turn your nose up at a minimum wage job if you have absolutely no experience doing anything. I know lots of kids who cringe at the idea of cleaning the popcorn off the floors at the movie theatre or flipping burgers, but you have to start somewhere. A good work ethic will reeward you in the future.

You don't need experience to get a job, but you need to be willing to work at the level of your experience.......
Which would be none?? What???

Start out when you are preteen- babysitting, pet sitting, mowing lawns, volunteering at a vet, even helping neighbors with setting up their computers and taking in their mail.
This gives you responsibility and contacts for references and other jobs.
Then you can build to jobs that require more responsibility and perhaps pay a little more. What are you skills/interests? What do you spend your time doing? Can you work that into something that someone would pay you for?

I am way past the preteen stage....

I don't have references really. Just friends. Do you have to know someone a long time for a reference??

When I applied for my Internship, I had to put down non-family members who I have known for at least 5 years.

But what if you don't see these people often or not at all again??

I don't understand this stuff...

Well what do you spend your time doing when you are not in school?
Are you in any sports activites? Coaches are great references as they see how hard you work and that you consistently show up.
Our high schools require a service learning project for graduation, including volunteer work, volunteer work is a great place to make a contribution and contacts for paying work.
Even my 10th grade nephew who isnt allowed to turn out for sports ( even if he had the inclination), and spends practically every waking moment on the computer on some sort of networked game, is a tester at a computer company for... games!
What kind of work have you been looking for that you were turned down?
My first job was in a nursing home kitchen ( not inc babysitting) when I was 15. I didn't get it, when I initially applied, but they kept my resume and called me back.
My niece got a job through a temp agency during winter break ( she is 18), often people who like physical labor get construction work during summers, work in alaska on fishing boats, really lots of jobs for people who will work hard to get experience, they don't pay much usually but hey! you're smart enough to get into college, you can make it into something else.

I am in college. I do college work. It takes me forever to do stuff too. I am slow at reading while taking notes on things. It took me 3 hours to read and take notes on 10 pages of material for one of my classes this past semester. Since I have emotional issues related to school (every semester I go through phases where I cry uncontrollably over things like thinking that I didn't do well on a test/quiz/etc. or that I can't understand what I am reading or whatever) my parents told me to make schoolwork my priority, but I wanted to tutor because you only do it for 2-3 hours a week, so that's not too much. I recently got invited to join Golden Key and Gamma Beta Phi (honor societies that do community service) so I will be doing community service in those. I wanted to join them when I transferred, but of course they have the requirements that you have a certain GPA at the school and a certain # of credit hours taken at that school, so you have to be invited. So, most of what I have been doing is schoolwork and that's probably nothing, right?

I have never looked for work. In High school I was not allowed to work. And by now I am so afraid and have no clue, so why bother?? :'(

If this tutoring thing ask for employment history and references, I'm just going to drop the class and forget it. I give up! :'(

are you eligible for workstudy?
Workstudy is part of your financial aid package, and is often on campus. Jobs are easier to get than in the "outside" and more flexible for your studies as well.
You could tutor, but that sounds stressful unless you really enjoy it, I would try and find something mindless, or something that you can do while studying ( like shelving books or taking tickets at a sporting event)
For the attention challenges have you read Learning Outside the LInes?
It is written by two Ivy league grads who have learning disabilties and it has some great tips that might be useful for you.

So I don't understand what you are looking for exactly? Are you looking for help to get a summer job, or a job during school?

workstudy--I highly doubt it. My parents only pay like $2000 a semester for school. That's all that they have to pay.

I don't know what I'm looking for either, but I am upset right now. How do you get references?? How do make a resume?? I made one, but I'm not sure I did it right.
I'm sure this semester is going to be another tortuous one of crying nonstop. I honestly hate doing work. I'm not even sure why I am in college sometimes. Life is too scary.

About the reading thing.-- I like to read and when I read at leisure I can read good and concentrate but I'm not really reading for understanding (like you do in a literature class where you have to find the hidden meanings of stuff), but when I read to take notes it takes forever......and getting frustrated only makes it worse.

bluealien-don't give up so easily. Even if the tutoring thing asks for references or employment history doesn't mean that if you don't have any they won't take you. Someday you will need to find a job. It isn't always easy and you won't get every job you apply for but you for sure will not get it if you don't even apply.
You might inquire at a close by elementary school especially in a poorer area if they need any volunteers. They are always looking for people to help in the classroom with various things like reading with a small group. Alternatively if you belong to a church you might do some volunteering at the daycare. Or you might volunteer as a day camp counselor during spring break or summer. Many times these lead to paying positions.
You could also ask fellow students where they have found work. Word of mouth is a great way to find a job. There are many jobs that don't need experience. Also try temp agencies who will evaluate your skills and can send you on temporary assignments. These can be as simple as just answering phones or filing. Also most schools have a career office where people who are looking for employees post jobs.

But lastly it seems you have huge fears about finding work that you might find it helpful to talk to someone at your schools counseling center.
Good Luck

I used to work in the church nursery, but I haven't been to church in like a year and a half :/

Mom60and emeraldkitty(I guess you are the only two reading this)-- i want to do the following things within the next year and a half. Is this too much for someone to do??

Do grad schools even care about stuff like this?? I am already a college senior (bad to start doing more stuff now i know) but I will have to stay for another year because i just recently switched majors. I hated my other major but I just kept putting the switching off for some reason. For some reason since I was invited (you had to be invited because of grades and certain amount of credit hours at the current school--transfer hours didn't count), you couldn't just ask to join) recently to join Golden Key and Gamma Beta Phi I want to get involved with stuff.

Spring 2005:
Anthropology club
English conversation club --volunteer to help foreign students with their english every friday for one hour in the afternoon
I will be doing some service stuff for gamma beta phi and golden key international honour society.
Recreate state--a one day thing where you plant flowers on campus.

Summer 2005:
Operation toybox --an organization that takes toys and cleans thems, assembles them (like clothing dolls and stuff) before giving them to disadvantaged kids.
Bible School (I need to go back to church I know)
Not sure what else, I really really need a vacation where I actually go somewhere. I have only been out of this state once in 6 years. :( I really miss some folks in AZ which also might contribute to my crying fits.

Fall 2005:
Operation Christmas Child--send a shoebox to a child--does this count as anything??
Emerging Leaders Program--not sure if I will do this
International Friendship Program--keep in touch with a foreign student and meet with them once a month to do something fun on campus
W.I.L.D--a one day leadership conference type thing for women.
Service Sunday--they plant trees/flowers again
Alternative Fall Break--go with a group over fall break somewhere to help disadvantaged people.
Gamma Beta Phi and Golden Key stuff again
Anthro Club

Spring 2006:
Gamma Beta Phi and Golden Key
Recreate State again
International Friendship Program
Antho Club

Is it going to look bad to employers/grad school that I waited until now to do all this stuff?? I think another poster on this board said that grad schools want research not volunteerism stuff, which makes no sense to me. I mean if your helping others for FREE why is that not acceptable??

I also hope that I can get into the Honors Program for Anthropology (you have to take 3 courses for honors credit + a honor thesis). I hope I can handle this.

I am really confused. :(

DD has the perfect job (she says). She is the school receptionist for 40 minutes every morning. She would be getting to school that early anyway by bus...so she may as well be earning some money. She gets paid more than minimum wage AND she gets a parking permit in the faculty lot. Working after school just isn't possible with music lessons and her one sport. Before school is great!!

Bluealien; if you are really interested in doing so many people oriented extra c's maybe you should consider a people oriented career. Just having the degree is a great help in many places which need customer service people. You may be able to move up the ladder quickly.
