How do your high school classes work?

<p>I think New Jersey requires at least all public students to take gym every year. just fyi :)</p>

<p>i took geometry in 8th grade so this is how my school works in this case:</p>

<p>english:
9: all in regular
10: honors
11: AP lang
12: AP lit</p>

<p>french:
9: french 2
10: french 3H
11: AP french lang
12: AP french lit</p>

<p>history:
9: world civ
10: modern world
11: AP US
12: interdisciplinary course</p>

<p>math:
9: algebra 2 and trig H
10: precalc H
11: BC calc
12: multivariable, etc</p>

<p>science:
9: honors bio
10: AP chem and honors physics
11: AP physics C mechanics
12: AP physics C e and m</p>

<p>Normal Honors Track (things have changed a bit since I started)</p>

<p>English:
9th: When i took it, you had a choice of either Honors or Advanced (Honors was harder...both would be 5.0 classes). They got rid of that
10th: Pre-AP English
11th: AP Eng. Lang
12th: AP Eng. Lit</p>

<p>Math
9: H Geometry
10: H Algrebra 3/4
11: H Pre-Calc
12: AP Calc AB or AP Calc BC (AP Stats is offered after algebra 3/4)</p>

<p>Social Studies
9: Contemporary Issues (now its not a requirement...was before)
10: AP Euro
11: Ap US History
12: AP Gov (1 sem.) Ap Macroecon (1 sem.)</p>

<p>Science (2 tracks)
9: H Earth Science
10: H Biology
11: H Chem
12: Ap Bio, AP Chem, AP Physics</p>

<p>9: H Biology
10: H Chem
11: AP Chem, H Anatomy, AP Physics
12: AP Bio and any class not taken yet</p>

<p>Foreign Language (Depends on where you start...but I took French in middle school so...)
9: French 3/4 or Spanish 3/4 or German 1/2
10: French 5/6 or Spanish 5/6 or German 3/4
11: H French 7/8 (this class didnt fill my year...so it didnt exist) or H Spanish 7/8, nobody has taken german through 3/4
12: AP French (doesnt exist still) 9/10 or AP Spanish 9/10</p>

<p>1 year of PE and 1 year of Fine Arts are required to graduate. There is also AP Comp Government, AP Art History, and AP Music Theory offered.</p>

<p>Ok Masterus...
At my school (small public in OH) it is fairly common to take a math course path like Fizix's...granted, not many students do it, but if a student can test out of lower level math, he/she can move up. I'm hardly the most advanced math student at my school, but I'm taking Multivariable calc this year.</p>

<p>Most colleges also don't compare students from the same school. Applications are tossed into piles and usually read in the order in which they are received...not by school. </p>

<p>"CIT, not the best.
Not every kid can get into a state univeristy."
If you're kidding, that's pretty funny.
If not...Caltech is an AMAZING school for math/science. Props to fizix for getting in!! (Though I still maintain that Yale is better <em>nudge nudge</em>!)</p>

<p>English:
9th: Honors 9th Grade English
10th: Honors 10th Grade English
11th: AP Language
12th: AP Literature
<em>Some students substitute Honors 11 or Honors 12 for the respective APs</em></p>

<p>Soc. Studies... it's messy:
9th: H. US History
10th: AP NSL
11th: AP World History and/or AP US and/or AP Psych
12th: AP Psych and/or AP US</p>

<p>Also... there is a special certificate program where you take these fancypants Soc. Studies classes along with those during each year.</p>

<p>Math:
Track 1 - Most People
9th: H. Geometry
10th. H. Alg 2
11th: H. Precalc and some take AP Stat too
12th: AP Calc BC and/or AP Stat</p>

<p>Track 2 - Me and More and more others every year
9th: H. Alg 2
10th: H. Precalc
11th: AP Calc BC and/or AP Stats
12th: AP Stats and/or Multivariable/Diffeq at local college</p>

<p>Science (oh god... MESS...)
MOST STUDENTS:
9th: H. Physics
10th: H. Bio AND H. Chem
11th: AP Chem and/or AP Bio and/or APES
12th: AP Phys and/or AP Chem and/or AP Bio and/or APES</p>

<p>My Insanity <em>just for kicks to see how I abused the system</em>:
9th: H. Physics
10th: H. Bio and H. Chem and H. Anatomy and Physiology
11th: AP Bio (could very well be AP chem though) and Biotechnology
12th: AP ES and Internship at NIH [if AP Chem were offered in the morning it woulda replaced APES)</p>

<p>then there are kids in the PrePharm program.... I'm not too sure how that works...</p>

<p>Kids in the Medical Careers program:
9th. H. Physics
10th. H. Bio and H. Chem and perhaps H. Anatomy
11th: Medical Careers 1 (Triple Period) and perhaps H. Anatomy
12th: Medical Careers 2 (internship, 2 or 3 period) and AP Bio or H. Anatomy</p>

<p>this is the honors/ap/"most rigorous" track for most academically inclined students! we have a lot of requisite courses - all the courses after that are free-for-all, since we only need 24 credits (1 full half-semester course) to graduate, but we have 32 credit slots avaliable (however gym and study halls and such don't count)</p>

<p>math:
9th - enriched geometry
10th - enriched algebra ii/iii (basically ii split into half, its weird.)
11th - enriched precalculus
12th - ap calculus bc OR ab</p>

<p>science:
9th - environmental science, physical science
10th - biology, chemistry
11th - ap chemistry or ap bio, physics
12th - ap physics (b+c combined class)</p>

<p>english:
9th - english 9
10th - english 10
11th - humanities OR modern american lit OR british lit OR journalism OR there are millions of english classes you could take. :)
12th - ap english literature</p>

<p>history:
9th - world civilizations
10th - 20th century studies
11th - ap us hist OR ap euro hist OR psych OR democracy OR dadaa... again, long list of history classes you could take
12th - again. usually most "A" students take atleast one history AP within 11th-12th, 2 if they're that into history. </p>

<p>language:
usually goes (french/spanish/latin) ii > iii > iv > ap course.
we just implemented german, chinese, and sign language within the recent years :)</p>

<p>and there are all manners of electives like bioethics, electronic engineering... you could take multivar calc or orgo at a nearby college aswell... i'm only listing the basic guidelines, many of skipped into bc calc their soph year because they're already ahead, or such - those are special cases, though.</p>
