How does a D effect mu chances

Hey, I took AP Biology with no prerequisites recommended by the College Board because it was the only AP offered to magnet 10th graders; anyways I got a ‘D’ one semester. With this mar on my career even if I finished with a 3.8+ unweighted GPA are my chances gone at most “good” schools? I really want to get into Claremont McKenna, do they discount you if you’ve received a D? This is assuming my area of study in college will have nothing to do with science.

Thanks

A D is always going to be a problem on a transcript, esp for a school like you mention. The best thing is to be sure you don't get another, and to show increasing upward trend in grades. It's more important to be successful in than to take AP's too early. DD's private school does not even allow AP BIO except to Sr's, I think, and they say it is the hardest AP science, but I'm not sure if physics wouldn't be harded if you do't have the math abilities. I'm not sure if this will keep you out, but be sure you have every other 'reccommended' requirement they ask for. I don't think they'll automatically discount you, but you need to shine elsewhere.

Well, that's two strikes. In other words, I wouldnt say that you've completely lost your chances. Nonetheless, if you dont start getting at least 90% A's, you wont make it. A D looks really bad, and is a sign of extreme carelessness, not to mention your skills at making important decisions (colleges want to see you know yourself and your capabilities)

But don't forget that on your transcript, only the final grade will show - so get to work and bring up your grade! You still have time.
