How does a high school writer....

How would a writer in high school show this to colleges? Outside of tests and grades, I've come up with this so far. Is this it?

Contests, Published, Internship at Newspaper, Workshops, School Paper, School Writing Clubs, School Writing Book

....just write it! duh!

How about in your application essay?

yeah, definitely. if you write about it, they'll see your passion.

I always found essays about writing kind of odd, though... if you can do it nicely, go for it, but the concept is a difficult one. Writing about writing....

I would say show it through your school paper, literary magazine, writer's club...

Get your English teacher to write one of your recommendations. Assuming you are a good student (and if you can write then you should be in an English class) he/she will likely include that in the rec.

And you don't have to write an essay about writing....just write a killer essay
