How does a parent losing a job effect my fafsa?

.

Is there another parent who works? What schools are you applying to?

Your FAFSA EFC will drop. What does that mean in terms of FA? It depends.

Contact your college financial aid office, and ask for a “Special Circumstance” review. The paperwork may be right on the college website. The sooner you start the process, the sooner you will be able to get an answer.

Wishing you all the best.

The parent losing a job doesn’t affect your FAFSA at all. If you are completing the fafsa for the 2017-2018 school year, you used 2015 tax year information. If your parent recently lost their job…the 2017-2018 FAFSA would still reflect what was earned in 2015.

Actually…contact the college(S) and find out the process for a special circumstances consideration with regard to the job loss. The school will tell you want you will need to do…and when.

Yes…get the info you need ASAP…but understand that some schools do NOT process these requests until later.

Are you a returning college student or an incoming college freshman…or a HS student?

I assumed that you are a first time applicant, but that may not be the case. I would call the school and ask how this gets handled. We don’t really have enough information. Good luck to you.

Ok…so according to past threads…you are a returning student.

Contact YOUR college and ask the process for a special circumstances consideration. They will tell you.

Some schools will not consider a job loss for a certain period of time…because there is an expectation that the parent will find another job. BUT ask what you need…get it all ready…and do what your school tells you to do.

Does your college meet full need for all students? If not, you may not see a significant increase in need based aid…so just prepare yourself for all results.
