I've had a couple kids ask this in PM.

I vaguely remember Kelsmom or someone mentioning that the rules have changed for those students who want to file FAFSA for an Unsub Loan without parent info (parents in both cases won't cooperate).

So, what's the deal?

And, if this is true, when did/does this go into affect? Did it just start with this current school year (so, for people filing FAFSA in 2010) or what???

It is not easy to do this. The parents must submit a signed statement indicating that they will not provide parent information and that they will not be supporting the student in any way … the student cannot live with them, they cannot carry the student on their insurance (medical, dental, car), and they cannot give the student a penny of suppport. All of this must be detailed in the statement that the parent signs. Each school has a way of handling these situations, so the student needs to check with the school. We have done only one that I know about (20,000 undergrads).

The loan will be unsub only at dependent undergrad limits for year in school. The FAFSA is completed without parent info, and the signed statement must be approved by the school and kept on file; it is only good for that award year (must be redone every year).

It started last year. Schools never “have” to award loans to a student, so the school may say that they will not be doing this.

As we all know, it’s tough for a reason (otherwise everyone would be doing it).

Why would everyone want an unsubsidized loan? Anybody can get that, right? Or maybe parents would rather not do the paperwork?
