how does a WF on the transcript affect chances?

Due to a miscalculation on my part, I was withdrawn from an online course. I was attempting to take a required course (AP US History) online rather than at school in order to free up my schedule to take more classes at school; APUSH was one of the only courses that was available to take online due to our school's policy that science/math courses must be taken at school. I was taking four classes at the time and got overwhelmed. I didn't realize that I was going to be withdrawn until it was too late. I had only done a couple assignments.

The result is a temporary "F" on my transcript until I retake the semester this fall, at which point my semester grade will replace the "F". However, I am applying to colleges before that grade is replaced. How will this affect my chances of admission? I am looking at the following schools:

Vanderbilt

American

Georgetown

George Washington

Wake Forest

Thank you for your time and understanding!

Make sure you indicate this on your app if at all possible.
Can’t say that it helps your chances in anyway, but I think if you explained it that it wouldn’t have too large of a negative effect on your app.
Make sure you talk to your GC. They might be helpful in explaining this by calling the admissions people at universities where you apply.

dont go to george washington, its very expensive and not even a good school compared to vandy and gtown. i would even chose wake over gw

Thanks for the advice so far. I wasn’t sure if it was appropriate to include a note, since there really aren’t any “extenuating circumstances”, and it was really just my irresponsibility anyway. I was thinking about sending an updated GPA/rank/transcript once it becomes available. I know some schools, like GT, do this in their “midyear report”. Anyone have any more information?
