If you don't quite fit the requirements of the first-choice major, do they consider you for that alternative major and if you fit, accept you into that major? I'm not 100% clear on how this alternative major selection works.

ya thats exactly how it works. if you do not meet their standards for your first choice, they will concider you for your listed alternative major. if you meet those standards, you will be accepted for that second major.

That's great, thanks!

ucla, from my understanding, only considers alternate majors in the college of letters and science for community college transfers who are tap certified. i learned this bit of info from an admissions rep, who advised me to fulfill major prereqs for an alternate major, this past summer at ucla.

this site seems to clarify this further: http://www.college.ucla.edu/up/tap/faq.htm
look under the question "can non-ucla college majors be tap certified?"

ucb doesn't offer alternate majors, and, for others uc's, i have no idea.

For sure UCLA only allows alternative majors to TAP certified students.
