I've determined that I am applying for the regular decision deadline but I'm not sure when I should apply within that time frame. From what I understand one can apply anywhere from nov 2-jan 20 and it looks better when one applies earlier. However, I want to apply so my first semester senior year grades will be considered and so my november SAT scores are considered. When is the optimal time to apply so UMCP doesn't think I am a slacker but so they can see my grades? Is there I should indicate that I'm applying late so they can see my upward trend in grades? Or do you think that I should apply before the priority deadline and not even bother showing them my senior year grades(straight A's) and my november SATs?

What is your current GPA and SAT score?

3.5 UW GPA and 1210 MATH +CR.

With the first semester of grades my GPA will be 3.7 and november SAT will be 1350-1400 based on princeton review practice tests.

It’s a tough call. If Maryland didn’t have January admission, then I would say to go for it because the worst than can happen is that you get deferred. You won’t get rejected. However, in this case, the worst that can happen is that you are admitted as a spring admit, and that can’t be changed to a fall admit. If you’re willing to go there as a spring admit, then submit now…but if you would only go there as a fall admit or want a better chance for fall, I would submit after you get your November scores.

You should DEFINITELY apply for the priority deadline. They will receive your updated SAT scores, and you’ll send them your first semester grades before they make a decision on you anyway. (Make SURE they get them!) The decisions are made taking these into account (i.e. they don’t make any decisions prior to mid-January). I don’t remember the numbers, but the admit rate is much higher for the priority deadline apps than the later January date. You’d be putting yourself at a disadvantage if you wait. You could also ask that your guidance counselor also mention your midterm grades in their recommendation, too if it is concerning to you.

The GC at Son’s school sent out an email today reminding everyone to get their UMCP app in by Nov 1. The message went on to say that 95% of UMCP’s incoming freshmen apply before the priority deadline.

This 95% statistic seems inaccurate, but yeah, I will be applying early admission. Does anyone here want to look over my essay/short answers when I’m finished or maybe give me some advice? With some of my short answers I put down semi-funny answers but still relate to the question. If you want to see them please let me know, I’d just rather not post them on a public forum.

I would say that 95% seems pretty correct, maybe it is 90%, but it is high, if you even look at previous acceptance threads the very very large bulk come out in Feb. Very few come out in April, and very few of them are actually accepted.

I think it’s a little higher than 95%. The figure I heard from the college visit and from my counselor was 98% last year. But ya, there’s no reason really not to apply to UMD before the priority date.

Also, anyone know how long they take to track the stuff you sent them?
