I have a friend who is waitlisted for Penn, and it is her first choice. Penn doesn't let waitlisted people know if they get in until mid May, but she has to commit to matriculating to her second choice college by May 1st.

So what are you supposed to do about other colleges and being on the waitlist at Penn?

You submit a deposit to another school, which is a couple hundred bucks that goes towards your enrollment fee if you attend. If you get into Penn then you lose that deposit. If not then you go to that other school.

The two people that I know of that got in off the waitlist last year both found out in June.

Yeah … you can’t count on getting off the waitlist.
You can hope, but you have to move forward with your second choice.
Pay the deposit, visit the school, register for classes, etc. …
Then if you do get in off the waitlist, you will have another decision to make.
By that time, though … who knows … you might be really happy with your second choice.

Just to clarify: So you just submit the deposit & etc. for the other school, and if by chance you get taken off the waitlist at Penn, you back out from the other school and matriculate to Penn? (while losing your deposit money to the other school)

yeah … that’s how it works …

You can accept to stay on as many waitlists as you want, right?

Alright, thanks for the info everyone!

yeah … you can accept waitlists for as many schools as you want …
but I think you really should only accept to those schools that you really would want to switch over to come June if your selected …
