How does choice of major affect chances ?

Looking at either Sociology or Business or Undecided majors for Virginia Tech, James Madison, Delaware, Pittsburgh, etc.

How does one's choice of major affect "chances" ?

Would I have a greater chance of acceptance applying under Sociology versus Business ?

Appreciate any input on chances of getting in.

Thanks !

It really depends on the college. Unfortunately, I don’t know much about the colleges you are applying to.

It’s true that at some schools, some majors are more competitive. For example, NYU Stern, its business school, has a more selective admissions rate than NYU CAS. If you want an example where it’s all in one school, Boston College’s business major is more selective than a lot of its other majors.

In general, it also has to do with your own interests shown through your ECs and essays.
Even if its easier to get into, let’s say Boston Coll.'s Psychology major than it is for its business major, being part of your school’s business club looks a lot better for the business major.

My advice would be to be honest and choose the major that interests you. If your ECs work with it, then you’ll be at a better position.

This is not to say that the major affects all colleges’ admission rates. You can switch your major easily in a lot of schools, so the chances aren’t affected at all for those schools.
