How does D1 status affect GWU's student body?

I'm curious because I highly value academics over athletics, and I couldn't care less which division the school is in. I've heard that at D1 schools, you may find yourself among many non-academically-minded students who were simply recruited to play sports. Is this true at GWU?

Short Answer: Nope

Longer: D1 sports are not big on campus at all (basketball is most popular). There are athletic recruits, but I’ve found that vast majority of athletes and the school population is “academically minded.” Basically, very few athletes come to GW with hopes of a sports career.

Smart students are in D1 ok? ! My roomate was D1 Lacrosse and She worked her butt off to meet all the practices and games and the classes. I have a true respect for our athletes!

GW is not a school known for it’s sports enthusiasm.
Sure, basketball is the most popular, but it’s not a school in which students go wild on game days-- or even care/know that there is a game.

Wait a minute- did you say we’re a D1 school? :)

@Multitasker, don’t worry, I certainly don’t believe that athletes can’t be smart as well! This wasn’t at all based on hard facts, it was simply a stereotype that I’d heard to be true at other schools. I was curious as to whether it actually held any weight, especially at GW because I’m really interested in attending.

Telperien, I don’t worry, haha It’s just that yes we have D1 but I can’t imagine anyone here tailgating, lol!

The idea of tailgating at GW really is pretty comical.

Can you imagine taligaiting in Michael Khors sandals and Gucci/ Escada attire? Or guys in extra narrow black pants or business suits?, yep, not exactly a hotdog hamburger crowd, more like sushi I would say, lol!

I can’t even figure out where you’d find a suitable parking lot!

That’s true, since GW owns all parking lots around DC and then transforms them into classroom buildings!

Sports aren’t that popular. A good amount of people actually have been going to the basketball games and it has been a good environment lately. But, you are more likely to see tailgates for the state of the union or the rally to restore sanity than you are for a basketball game
