How does Early Action work??

Hi, I've applied Early Action to UM, and the website says that results should be out "by December 23rd" and yet my counselor told me that Michigan is weird. Sometimes you hear back earlier.... I'm confused? IS there a set date when decisions come out? And then on another forum I read that results came out mid-October? (OH MY) I of course am highly anticipating this result and would like to have an accurate count down. Also, does Michigan do anything like likely/unlikely letters??
Thanks!

Your counselor is correct. The latest you should hear is December 23rd but you might hear earlier if you apply EA

No set date.

Is there a specific “you could hear sometime after (say December 1st)” or could I hear anytime? ie… Mid October.

“By December 23” means just that. Michigan will respond to EA applicants in batches, starting sometime in November all the way until late December. If you are deferred, Michigan will get back to you anytime between mid Febryary and late April.

And Michigan does not send out “likely letters”.

Are these batches based on priority? Are they grouped based on anything? Also, do results come in the mail or is there an online site with this result?

I believe that last year, everyone pretty much heard in big batches over just a couple of days at the very end of the time limit in December–the first day all the in-state admissions heard, and the second day was out of state. Not like when they used to do their rolling admissions that dribbled out constantly. No likely letters for regular non-athletic types as far as I know, although if a department is really interested in you, you may be invited to special events to “introduce you to Michigan and help you make up your mind.” Deceisions came by email, as well as through the applicants’ “Wolverine Access” account online, and then a letter came in the mail a few days later.

Also some of the deferred’s didn’t hear till VERY late in the summer, although perhaps Michigan will be more prepared this year for the number of applications they will get.

^ sorry, I mean that the wait-listed didn’t hear till very late.

Oh… how do those students know to put a deposit or not for a different school if they are waiting on Michigan?

All non-waitlisted will hear before May 1, 2012 (Nat’l Decision Day) and therefore, they can put down a deposit by May 1st. Those put on a waiting list should in no way expect to get admitted into UMich - very, very few (count 'em on your fingers) get in off the wait list.

Last year the earliest responses came out on December 16. Massive e-mails were sent out between December 16 and December 20. Two years ago the earliest decisions came out towards the end of October and batches were sent out approximately every other week. I would expect this year it will be more similar to last year than the year before because ofthe Common App.

laddydah, if you are waitlisted at UofM you are well advised to put a deposit down at another school. Very few come off the waitlist. Last year they wanted to trim the size of the freshman class because they had over enrolled in previous years. But, in general, cross your bridges when you get to them as the saying goes.
