How does FASFA work?

Does it give aid through Cal Grant and Pell Grant? I thought Cal Grant was gpa stuff.

FAFSA does not give any aid, it’s a form to fill out whereby schools determine your financial situation and use it as a guide to the aid they are able to give you. This would include government grants, etc. Don’t know how California determines amount of aid.

To add to what franglish said, FAFSA is used to determine eligibility for federal aid (like Pell Grant). Some schools use it to determine their own grant aid as well. Others will use both FAFSA and CSS Profile. Some will use their own forms.

California publics (CSUs, UCs, and CCCs) all use the FAFSA to determine need. This includes qualification for Cal Grant (uses income and asset ceilings listed on FAFSA, not EFC). There is a GPA verification form also required for Cal Grant. Both are needed as Cal Grant is a need-based grant, not a merit-based scholarship (GPA is most likely only required so as to keep the grant aid only going to those who have already proven decent academic achievement), and must be sent in by the March 2 deadline.
