how does financial aid and admission work?

when u apply u apply for both admission and financial aid, so are they completely seperate, because what's the point of doing paper work for those who aren't gonna get accepted, or is it u all apply and they only do those who gets accepted.

apply to both. financial aid application deadlines for a lot of colleges (i don't think this is true for state schools, at least it wasn't for mine) is before you are notified of acceptance/rejection. ex. i applied to penn. app was due jan.1; fin aid materials due feb.1; notify of acceptance/rejection march 29.

colleges want both in before they make their decisions so that you know how much financial aid you will get when you get you acceptance letter

but see what i'm saying is that they only accept a little percentage of ppl so for those who all got rejected the financial still does all the paper work for them? isn't that kind of a waste of money and time

That was the question I had to. See my posted thread a few below from your's.

If schools waited to get the FA information until the acceptance decisions are made, they'd never be able to get the FA offers out with the decision letters or shortly thereafter. Acceptees wouldn't be able to weigh FA offers before the May 1 response date. So even if they don't calculate all the offers, they still need to have the paperwork.

And remember, only the "need-blind" schools completely separate admissions and financial aid.
