How does getting a job work?

I'm thinking about getting a job for the summer, just for something to do (plus college costs money so), but how does it work- I need to fill out an application, right? Do I need to give a resume-- why would I need to, I'm a teenager in high school? How do I know places need a new cashier or whatever- no one posts help wanted signs anymore. Idk what I'm doing...

Walk into the place.

Ask, “Are you hiring?”

If they say no, leave.

If they say yes, ask, “Do you hire [your age]-year-olds?”

If they say no, leave.

If they say yes, say, “Can I have an application?”

They give you an application. You can either fill it out right there and give it to them, or take it home and bring it back later. You don’t need a resume for normal fast food/retail jobs.

Take the application back.

They call you for an interview. Go to the interview. My McDonald’s interview lasted about five minutes and it was mostly about planning my work schedule, so once I got the interview I knew I was hired.

They will call you if they decide to hire you.

Apply to more than one place! I applied to ten places and only one called me back at all.

Get a job application at every location in town. Call or show up every two or three to check on it. If you have friends that work there, make sure they put in a good word for you.

I applied at nine locations, interviewed at four, and ended up getting a job at two of the places. BE PERSISTENT

You can either go into the place and ask if they’re hiring, or check their website if its a retail or fast food place. Most major businesses will tell you to fill out an application online and will give you the web address and maybe take down your name if they are currently hiring. Smaller places like local diners or country clubs will probably give you paper application which you can either say “thanks!” Take it and leave, or you can sit down and fill it out on the spot. When I applied to work at a country club I filled it out on the spot and gave it back to the manager who immediatley gave me a mini interview and told me he’d call me if I got the job. When I applied to Nike I just found a job opening on their website and filled out an application. They called me like 2 weeks later and gave me a phone interview. At the end they scheduled me for a real interview. After I came in for the real interview they called me a week after that and said I got the job. And you don’t need a resume. Just fill out the app.

If you’re walking in to a food place, don’t come in at lunch hour or rush hour-- come in the middle of the afternoon when they’re not busy.
