How does grade forgiveness look when applying to colleges?

So I had a 3.09 with 4 C’s throughout high school, and I retook them all during the summer and got all A’s to get a 3.48 GPA but I just found out that it shows the original grade as well as the retaken grade, so colleges can still see that I got a C, but it’s not accounted for in my GPA. I have a 1490 SAT, 9 AP’s throughout high school and I got 4’s in the 6 that I’ve taken already, and I do a lot of volunteer work and stuff like that.

I’m thinking of applying to schools like University of Washington, New Jersey Institute of Technology, Northeastern, Stony Brook, etc.

Some colleges may recalculate your GPA, others will take the one provided by your HS.

What Erin’s Dad says. I’ll just add that it will make a bigger difference if you are applying to competitive smaller school (LAC) or universities that use wholistic admissions. For the colleges you list, your GPA will probably reach the criteria for consideration. And your SAT scores are higher than averages for those schools. They’ll like your 1490. LAC’s and schools with wholistic admissions will look at the actual transcript. Taking the courses over was a good thing to do and suggests you are willing to put in the effort when necessary. The question will be why it took a retake in 4 different classes. So there will be questions about aptitude and motivation. Perhaps you can address those in the essay, indirectly (not by trying to excuse them but by discussing your involvement in activities that may have contributed to your growth as a person but not to your grades, for example).

Thanks guys! I wanted to clarify to see if this makes a difference, but my school calculated two grades per class, so I got 4 C’s, but in 2 classes for 2 semesters, Pre-Calculus and AP Calculus, but I got a 4 on the AP Test. Would the fact that they are both math negatively affect me if I’m applying for Pre-Med/Pre-Dental or Computer Science depending on the college?
