How does grading work at Berkeley?

Hello!

How is grading at Berkeley? Do all of the classes follow a similar style for grading? Is there only a certain percent of students that are allowed to get A’s and B’s? If so, how much? Is the system of grading dependent on the college? If so, how’s the grading for the college of chemistry and the college of engineering? Another poster on the Berkeley forums said the average GPA at Berkeley is around 3.2. Is this accurate?

Overall, is grading competitive?

A thorough explanation of the grading at Berkeley would be appreciated. Thanks a lot!

no, it depends on class

True, it depends totally on the class.
Many of the easier class still have the old high school grading where 90+%=A etc.

But, all of the science and engineering classes have a certain percentage getting A's, B's, C's D's etc.

As a general rule, 20% get A's.

Here's how it works: YOU GET ****ED! hahah j/k. NOT. If you don't study you will fail miserably, guaranteed. :)

Bubbles for sale: What % of students get B's, C's, D's, and F's?

on average, humanities classes give out more than 50% a's

on average in math and science classes, 20-25% get a's, and the next roughly 30-40% get b's

its set by the department

we also had a thread on this a few days ago
