How does Harvard know?

Harvard "supposedly" wants to admit students from disadvantaged socioeconomic backgrounds. Well I can't really find anywhere in the common app or the supplement to put your family's financial information, except the Additional Information Section....well, what if we want to put other valuable information there? What if some students forget to put their financial information in their additional info section at all? If Harvard is serious about its new policy, why don't they have their own online application where students can put their financial information like the UC apps? Am I being stupid and missing something here? Please someone tell me, I am seriously confused.

that's stuff that goes into the css profile and the fafsa form. i'm sure that they'll get all their economic info from there.

Won't these forms be a little late in the admissions process, considering that they are usually submitted in February/March?

Well, your disadvantaged socio-economic status can be shown through a combination of the under-served community and school you live & attend (that hasn't send anyone to harvard in its history), what you list as your parents occupations, and by writing a "sense of identity" essay talking about growing up, facing your challenges, etc. Many first generation immigrants come across the worst of these, if you're one of those, elaborate about your rich heritage, and, of course, assimilation into american culture. Good luck!

No, EA deadline for submitting for financial aid was 11/2, RD is 2/1.

The CSS profile can be completed and submitted online anytime, and it is basically an 'estimate" of earnings for the year, or maybe it is from taxes from 2005, I think. When FAFSA comes out Jan 1st, that is when you can fill in info for 2006.

So it is in my best interest to fill out and submit both CSS profile and FAFSA?

if you want to apply for financial aid you have to fill out CSS and FAFSA. thats how they know.

not true, colleges and fin aid aren't suppose to talk much. you should discuss it in essay or rec letter or elsewhere on app

I read a book in which a former admission officer said that the admission officers are not supposed to know the financial info of the candidates.

elfelf is correct. They can tell based on your high school's history, your parents' educational background, and all the other "intangible" factors in your application (teacher recommendations, etc.)

Low-income students are RECRUITED (invited to apply) based on school characteristics, where you live, etc., but if you want a college you are applying to to know that you are from a low-income family, you have to say so in your application.

hmmm...i see.... so i guess the essay and additional info section is the best way to tell them..
