how does having an unspectacular first SAT score look?

well im going into grade 11 this year and im taking the sats for the first time in october . the problem is that my average sat score from practice tests is this

Math : 700 ++ (anywhere from 710 to 780)
Writing 650 - 730 or so
Critical Reading: 580-640 or so

so... would getting around 2000 in the sats on my first try ( with a mediocre CR score) hurt my chances at schools like mit, caltech etc;?

No one cares.

Admissions officers write down your highest score in each section and move on with their lives.

^^
Basically what he said. You should try to get over a 2100 for the caliber of schools you're looking at. I would advise an 800 in math if you're serious about Caltech (75% range is 780-800) You can make 800 if you don't make stupid mistakes though. I wish you good luck with CR.

If your retake score are higher, no one will care.

You have really good scores, don't kid yourself.

Just work on critical reading, but all in all, nobody cares about the first one.
