I am completely confused about how college admissions works ( I am just a Sophomore) . When I apply to UPenn Senior year, am I applying to the entire school, and then later I can pick a specific major (such as engineering, or economics or business) or am I applying to a specific department within UPenn such as the School of Engineering? If I get accepted into engineering does that mean I have to do a separate application for the prestigious Wharton school of bushiness? Can I say I am doing engineering at UPenn and then switch into Business Freshman or Sophmore year?

Thanks in advance for elucidating this whole process.

Hello! I was accepted ED this year to the College of Arts and Sciences. Basically, you want to determine which basic school would be best for you and then apply to one school–College of Arts and Sciences, School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, Nursing, or Wharton (business). Note: econ is in CAS, not Wharton. There are some very prestigious dual-degree programs which would allow you to major with both a Wharton and SEAS degree, but they are extraordinarily selective. You can apply for the single degree option so if you do not get admitted to the dual degree program, you can still have a chance of acceptance by your college of choice. It is also possible to internally transfer into a different school if you decide to switch from say chemical engineering to biochemistry (SEAS to CAS), but it is generally advised to try for Wharton when applying as a high school senior if you really are thinking of business because it is FAR easier to switch out of Wharton than into Wharton; but transferring to other schools sounds possible. Within each school, you can change your major relatively easy (i.e.: CAS chemistry to biochemistry, no problem, just make sure to take the right classes).
