How does merit aid affect need-based aid at Emory?

If a student qualifies for need based aid, but then gets merit aid, will Emory first reduce the loan portion of the need based aid, or will they just replace the need based grant with the merit aid (in effect making the merit aid have no net financial benefit)?
Example:
COA=60k
EFC 25 K
Need based aid 35k…made up of 27k in need based grant, 5500 in loans, and 2500 in work study

If that student gets merit aid of 10k…will the aid awarded from Emory then be:
10K of merit, 17K need based grant, 5500 in loans, 2500 work study
OR
25K need based grant, 10K merit (removing loan and work study)?

they will reduce the loan portion…the only time they reduce the grant is when the total amount of grants+scholarship exceed the COA.

Thank you @bernie12, I do hope it works like that (replacing the loans)…then if she earns merit, we might be able to swing it.
So you also think that if merit that is more than the loan/self help amount, the merit can actually reduce the net price?

Yes, the Financial Aid officer confirmed that receiving a merit scholarship would replace federal loans and work study, when my D applied for a dean’s scholarship last spring.

Thank you @Piccolomom1995! That’s 2 of you who say yes! Woohoo! :slight_smile: lol When we asked after our info session we got “It depends.” But the person we were talking to seemed to have that sort of answer for a lot of things. :wink:
