I'm sure this was posted somewhere in the yale c18 facebook group but I can't find it. Apparently you have to print out your RC crest and paste the picture to your car window? Do upperclassmen help you move in and carry boxes to your dorm?

Yup! Thats right. You’ll pull up outside Old Campus, assuming the student isn’t in TD or Silliman and upperclassmen descend on your car and carry your boxes/totes/bags to your room. May I advise you putting notecards on all your things (Like on each box or bag, not on every individual item) that has your name, college and room number. That way, if something does happen or get misplaced, someone will know where to take it. Also a thousand people won’t ask you what room you are in.

In TD (and I assume Silliman) you just pull up outside the gate (somehow there seems to always be a spot since they unload you really quickly). I labeled every box or bag with masking tape with her suite number. Just don’t get too spoiled, because next year you’ll be shlepping it all yourselves.

The detailed info is on the website.

@donnaleighg - I found the above website because we are doing our first upperclass move in to the RC this year. I could not find info about that on the website. Are there any instructions for us? Just hope to find a spot as close as possible to unload?

yeah, it’s always an “adventure” for upperclass kids. But they arrive over many different days, so we’ve always been able to park reasonably close. TD has an advantage as it’s more on the outskirts of “downtown”.

Sounds like move out. I lucked into a spot very close to Phelps Gate. I will hope for the same good luck in a few weeks as we look for a spot near the RC.

I’m going to reveal one of my favorite parking secrets–hopefully there aren’t too many of you. I have always been successful in finding a spot to park in Yale’s Chapel/York Garage, on York Street between Crown and Chapel. You do have to pay. It’s not too far from several of the colleges, and not terribly far from Old Campus. I like it much better than worrying about whether a parking meter is going to expire. (This is also a useful tip for parents’ weekend and commencement.) You can also often find a space at the surface lot across from the Yale bookstore, but that may be more expensive.

Sounds good @hunt. But that is for after you unload right? I am wondering about a place to park to unload. Or do you just pull over any where and dump everything on the sidewalk and have one person then park in the garage?

Yeah, you probably want to unload first. We have done the dump method, but usually we’ve found a space, sometimes after circling the block a number of times. This garage is pretty close to JE, though, and I think we just parked there and made multiple trips.

That is, we parked there one time and made multiple trips–not a time when we were bringing furniture.

We always had luck finding a space right by the residential college to unload. Then one of us stayed with the stuff while the other parked the car (and S began taking things up to room). Also on weekends there are several Yale lots with free parking, if that’s when you’re arriving. We almost always found a spot in Lot 51, which was convenient and close to my son’s residential college.

From what I remember, there seemed to be no parking signs in front of phelps gate, at least in the AM. You would pull up to the curb where you saw the kids from ur RC (they have flags). They and you unload your car and ur kid. They all go up to the room while you park in the designed lot. Then you take a shuttle from the lot back to phelps gate. We were so rushed that all 3 of us family members went to the lot. D wished that 1 person stayed back with her while 2 of us parked. Later when doing the shopping trips, would park at the meters on the street.

Oops, designated lot. The designated lot is listed in your move in info from the list if activities planned etc

YoHoYoHo, poster was asking about unloading and parking for upperclass move-in. It is different from freshman move-in–there are not all those helpers. It is on a later date–upperclassmen don’t move in until a few days after new frosh.

well truth be told, upperclassmen can go back any time after and including Wednesday the 20th (two days before the frosh). My kiddo always likes to go back early (even though there’s no dorm food for the older kids until, I dunno, Sunday night or so?)

Yeah, what I meant was upperclassmen, if they are wise, do not show up on freshmen move-in day. Too much chaos. My sons always went back early as well. But, no move-in help like freshmen got.

@clarimom,
Op said that they were class of 2018. That would imply that he/she was asking about freshman move in. Op also asked if upperclassmen help with their move in.

@YoHoYoHo some of were responding to musicmerit who later asked about upperclassmen.
