How does my list look?

Hey, I have narrowed down my list of colleges I will be applying to. Below are my stats for my ED, WUSTL. I have also applied to UVA and UMich already for Arts and Sciences with preferred admission to Ross. Finally, I have been accepted at Indiana- Bloomington Kelley School of Business. Based off of this, do you think my RD list is reasonable or should i add in some less competitive, admissions wise, schools.

Brown
Columbia
Dartmouth
Penn
Duke
Middlebury

I would be extremely happy to go to Indiana but i would rather go somewhere smaller.

I am applying ED to Wash U. Below are my stats and ec's. If you could chance me that would be awesome- I will chance back.

GPA: 3.74/4.0
SAT: 650 CR, 690 M, 670 W (not sending)
ACT: first time: 32 C, 33E 29M 32R 32S
Second time: 34 C, 35E 33M 35R 34S 11Essay
Honors: National Merit Commended Student, AP Scholar with Honors, Honor roll at school.
EC's: varsity crew at nationally known program (50 weeks a year, 20 hours a week), sales rep for SAT watch company, religious youth group board member and executive board member, latin tutor.

Originally from St. Louis but live in Northeast now.

Legacy (grandparent)

Senior year schedule: AP Eng Lit, AP U.S. Gov, AP Physics 1, Honors Latin Literature, Applied Calculus, Public Presentation, Sculpture

AP scores: 5's on US History and Eng Lang, 4 on Macro, 3 on Micro

Not applying for FA.

Blue Ribbon High School and one of top ranked schools in my state in Northeast

Applying to Olin Business School at Wash U.

Interviewing on November 3 as well as visiting for secod time.

Common App essay: really good i think, shows a lot about my maturity process in my religious community.

Rec's: i think good. Have one from econ teacher( i was one of three recs he wrote this year ) and other from apush teacher. GC knows me really well. Have additional rec from rowing coach that will be good.

If you can chance me for Wash U, i would be happy to chance back. Good luck to all applicants for class of 2019.

Ignore the chance piece of the post, just copied and pasted it from other thread.

If Indiana is affordable and you are happy to go there, then your safety is in the bag. You list looks fine in this case – you need only apply to any other school you may prefer over Indiana. (But some of these schools do not have undergraduate business majors.)

You could be a little more reasonable and apply somewhere below these schools. Otherwise there’s a good chance yo will end up at Indiana. Is the varsity crew (congrats, btw) something you would consider doing in college? are any coaches talking to you?

I was talking to coaches but stopped after i realized that i didnt want to commit to another four years. If i can, i would try to row in college but as a walk on. What match schools do you think i should apply to? Now that I am in Kelley, i don’t really have any matches that i like or that are on the same rigor.

It is not required to have any reach or match schools, if you have a safety that you like and can afford.

If you apply and get accepted to any of these other institutions(with good FA), would you attend? If you can’t answer yes for sure to that question, you’re probably best just dropping it all and going to Indiana!

Although, you did ED to WashU. I would wait to see the result from that school before you submit any RD apps. You will get back decision mid december and RD deadlines aren’t until Jan 1, usually.

You look pretty good for these schools, but your gpa is quite low. Why is that?

My GPA is low because for freshman year, i took only 1 honors and got a 3.65. Sophomore year i got a 3.66 and jumped to 4/5 core classes as honors. Junior year was 4 AP’s and 1 honors and i got a 3.91 for that year. So my cum is a 3.74 but it should be around a 3.75 because of first semester of senior year. Also, FA isnt that necessary for me. So i would attend any of these schools i got into.

You may only get into Indiana, so be sure that you want to go there. Or, pick some other safer schools. Your list is all reaches aside from Indiana. You could pick a more accessible version of Middlebury (Colby, Bates), maybe Miami as an alternative to Duke, Barnard for Columbia, etc. Just so you have some more realistic choices.

can’t do barnard as I am a guy but thank you for the thoughts.

I guess that wouldn’t work!

your matches should also have an admission rate above 30%.

Right now, you have a shot at ED, but if you don’t get in, recalibrate your list and consider all the schools you listed as match* as reaches, and find a few universities where you’re near the top 75% of the applicant pool.

schools with an admission rate below 30% should be considered “reaches” due to selectivity, regardless of the applicant’s stats.

Why does there seem to be the assumption that the OP “needs” to have a certain number of matches and/or reaches? Given that he would be “extremely happy” to attend Indiana, if Indiana is affordable, then he can be quite selective in making applications. He needs only to apply to schools which he may consider more desirable than Indiana, regardless of whether they are reaches or matches (i.e. they can be all reaches, all matches, or any combination of reaches and matches).

Miami of Ohio and Georgetown both have great B schools, and I consider MoO to be a smaller alternative to IU. Georgetown also has very good internship and recruitment in the Northeast.

Because OP may be happy with Indiana in theory, thinking s/he will actually get in somewhere else. In addition, it’s always good to have choices. Odds are fairly high that with this list, OP will get lots of rejection. What is s/he going to say when his/her classmates announce their admissions? Say “I’ve been turned down by yet another university today”? Having several acceptances really helps handle the rejections and having a choice is good, too. Finally, OP may still change between now and May. Having one or two other possibilities in case Kelley does not seem so desirable 4 months from now is safer.
I agree of course that all colleges OP applies to should be at least as desirable as Indiana.

What do you guys think about Vassar, bucknell, syracuse and BU? i was planning on applying to those 4 but decided not to because of the level of Kelley.

these could be matches and then some. your gpa is not weak, and the crew can explain a lot of any perceived weakness. I like the ACT, and think all four of these schools would want you.

@2015ct11‌ hey! I’ll be applying to UWash RD too and I think you have a great chance!

Just wanted to know, why exactly did you choose Indiana Kelley? I’m applying for business too! and I’m confused if I should apply there as a safety. Apart from my chances, can you tell me what you likes about the school?

It is a smaller school at a large university, about 5,000 out of 25,000, and is one of the top ranked business school for undergrad. Also, it is direct admission so you don’t need to worry about transferring in after a year and there are quantifiable stats you need for admission. Also, cheaper than most other top 25 business school and I’ve never met someone who didn’t like Indiana.
