How does National Merit Scholarship work?

What exact score do you need to qualify for NMSQ? I've heard from some people that all you need is 700 on each subject (210 overall). Is this true? Otherwise how does it work, is there a different number the CollegeBoard sets each year to determine who qualifies?

and how does the curve work?

well, it depends on what state you're in, but generally it's the top 1 to 2%

isn't the top 1 to 2% usually a perfect score on the PSAT...

no, it isn't. the average for CA last year was apparently a 216, i got a 220 and probably qualify according to the guidance ppl

so last year, if you received a 216 then you would automatically qet the scholarship?

Cut off scores from previous years: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=74297

no, if you qualify, you get notified in september of the following year and go through a competition process (i havent done it yet so i'm not sure how it works), with commended students, semifinalists, finalists

semifinalists and commended students are notified in sept. then the semifinalists have to send in an application with an essay and sat scores in order to be considered for finalist. 15/16 semifinalists become finalists and then are considered for scholarships at their #1 indicated institution or from the natl merit corporation.

I barely missed the cutoff, most likely, for Arkansas. It's lower here, usually around 203-207. I got a 199....GRRR!!!!

First blue link shows schedule. NMSC mailed Semifinalist notifications for the 2007 Program to school principals yesterday. Commended go out in four weeks.

Other blue links in that post show Semfinalist notifications for several prior years.

Good luck!
