I’ve been accepted to BU early decision (thank god), but I’m also curious about how Northeastern compares since a close friend got accepted there. Any comments?

I am not sure how the various programs compare but sat scores from Northeastern are 1060-1260, BU's are 1210-1370.

I'm pretty sure that Northeastern's average GPA, and SAT scores have gone up considerably. Taking into account the college of general studies at BU, I think that they are almost the same. I applied to both BU and Northeastern, and spent an overnight visit at each school. I loved the campus at Northeastern, as well as BU. If you want a good education, including a great coop program and a beautiful campus, Northeastern is a great choice. For a more traditional education, BU has a great rep. However, BU does not have a real campus.

plagmayer: where did you get those ##s? I'm not sure... but they sound a few years old. I'm pretty sure NEU is 1150-1310, and BU is something like 1250-1400. Everyone keeps saying NEU keeps moving up in the ranks, trying to catch up with BU. It hasn't happened yet satistically, but maybe in a few years.

Both schools offer really good programs. I applied to both of them, and like both of them. The thing that I don't like about BU, is that right after they collect your check, they forget about you. In a school with 16,000 kids (not that NEU is much smaller) its really easy to forget about people. And just as a personal preference, I LOVE NEUs campus. You should check them out (or your friend should...whoever applied) cuz you can get a real feel for the campus (or lack of it) just by walking on it. Some people love it, some dont.

I got them from the 2004 fiske guide to colleges. I guess they would be at least two years old then (2003 acceptance year). I don't know how accurate the book is either

Interesting perspective on the campus thing. Northeastern's campus really isn't much different from BU's. Its simply a matter of NEU having a traditional quad on Huntington Ave. Other than that, both schools are kind of smack in the middle of the city a la NYU or GW. Not to mention that NEU borders on pretty much the only dangerous section of Boston (Roxbury) versus BU at the end of Back Bay, which is one of the neighborhoods where the wealthier folk live in Boston (Back Bay, that is). At any rate, both schools are great!

Both are great schools, the BU stats include the Colllege of Gen. Studies so if you take those out you'll see on the web site that the other BU schools stats are even higher especially CAS and the Business School. Feel BU had more of a campus feel especially in the WEST section and where the whole new Student Village complexes are located. NE has the CO-OP advanatge which can be really interesting. Remember that BU is huge but is broken up into the individual colleges like CFA, CAS, etc so that allows more of a campus community. You can't go wrong with either. If you get accepted at both go up for the accepted student days in April and see what the other incoming Freshman are like.

NE web site has 1150-1290 for average SAT
Bu for class of 08 has 1250-1400

Both have an Honors Program with higher avaerages, no doubt ,and both offer merit scholarships to top students.

I got waitlisted to BU but accepted to NEU... Should I stay on the waitlist or just go for NEU if they're similar? I plan to major in history, minor in english, then off to law school for me...

BU has a campus?

Urban campus....sure. Besides the beach the South campus and Bay St Rd areas are very neighborly, tall trees, overlooking the river. The new Student Village area and West have more grass and benches, the village seems more like a courtyard type of environment. No its not like Haverford or any school with an enclosed bucolic campus but once you live there it feels like a campus.

i would BU is better, but then again i am a bit biased

I go to Northeastern and am probably transferring to BU. Believe me, I've seen both campuses and they are extremely similar. Don't believe anyone who touts Northeastern as having "more of a campus". Both are definitely urban campuses and the discussion ends there. Some of the Northeastern supporters would have you believe that it is some type of urban oasis, filled with grass, trees, flowers, etc... like a Duke or Princeton in the middle of a big city. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Biggest difference is academics, where BU is definitely a cut above NU.

Kiddly,

Why are you dissatisfied with NEU? I have a friend who just got a hefty scholarship there, and was also accepted at BU( no scholarship though). My parents and I took her with us to visit Boston and we,( she and I) actually spent the night with a friend who is a freshman at NEU who loves it. Incidentally she chose NEU over BU. I have to say, even though I chose BU, I actually loved the campus at NEU. So, again what are you dissatistied with at NEU? The students seemed really nice.

I guess its just not important to me that there are 2.8 blades of grass/sq acre. at NEU versus 2.15/sq acre at BU. Hehehe. Just kidding.

Coupla reasons: there are just too many slackers here at NU. Now don't get me wrong, as there are plenty of slackers at BU as well, its just that the slacker population at NU seems to be much, much higher. Also, I'm very disappointed at the co-op opportunities. I kinda think I was sold a bill of goods regarding the co-op program at NU. The opportunities I've been offered just haven't lived up to my expectations and I think that Northeastern hyped up the co-op possibilities based on the dot-com boom of a few years ago when every company was funded with tons of VC $$ and there was lots of opportunity to go around. Its a different game now. I'm doing very well in my engineering classes and its not like I'm a total dork who doesn't get along with other people or anything. I was expecting a lot more!

Also -- NU might be the right school for lots of people. Just not me and of course, this is all just my own opinion!

BU is a little better, but NorthEastern is pretty close. However, in terms of social factors, BU is a lot more progressive than NorthEastern.

BU is much higher ranked than NEU, according to US TIMES. Also, I just think that BU's reputation is much higher than that of NEU's.

hmm i was accepted to both schools but i'm leaning toward northeastern for the co-op... this is an interesting & helpful thread =)

kiddly, what else did you find dissatisfying about the co-op program? does it apply to all educational departments or particularly the engineering program?

BU is a much better school.
