Hya! I’m currently a junior in high school and I’ve heard that people can be offered scholarships if they excel in things like sports, art, and academics. What would one need to do to recieve a scholarship of this kind or two?
Apply.
It’s extremely hard to get scholarships for sports and maybe even for art to if you are not getting it directly from a college (which you will get when you apply next year). As for academic scholarships, just go to ■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■, ■■■■■■■■■■, fastweb.com, etc., or google “scholarships for…” and type anything specific that may apply to you, such as “orphans,” “asians,” or “christians,” (idk just some examples, but it can really be anything. Also, if you have naviance, they should have a list of scholarships that you can apply for too. A lot of the scholarships require you to write essays, around 500 words. Keep in mind that these scholarships are insanely competitive and you shouldn’t rely on getting any of them. Your best bet is to apply to the most selective scholarships that you qualify for (such as local scholarships)
Disagree with above. Those outside scholarships will not be near,y as worthy as ones offered to you by the colleges to which you are excepted.
So…apply to colleges where your stats will gain you merit aid.
Re: the arts…the generous awards are offers to majors based on the strength of their audition or portfolio.
Re: athletics. Are you a recruited athlete?
@thumper1 I’m not yet a recruited athlete, I think… I don’t know anything! XD
Thank you @Madison85, @Copperrrrrrrrrrr, and @thumper1!!!
Knowing anything is not usually a requirement for recruited athletes… jk. What are your stats (GPA, test scores, etc.)?
If you’re looking for academic scholarships, you need to find schools where you fall in the top 10-15% of students. You can start by using the college search tool on the CC site, which allows you to search for schools where you are among the top applicants.
It’s important to understand that schools are NOT going to give you academic scholarships just for being a great student. The most prestigious schools don’t even give out academic scholarships because every student accepted is already a top student. Many only award scholarships based on financial need (but are very generous to those who gain acceptance). Schools are offering money to students who are going to help them raise their stats, whether that be high GPA or standardized tests.
If you are an athlete, don’t sit around waiting to be recruited. YOU have to do the work, get yourself in front of a coach, fill out a recruitment form on the school’s athletic webpage. Same with most other scholarships. They aren’t going to come looking for you, you have to go after them.
@thumper1 Sorry, that is what I meant. The best scholarships always come from the colleges. However, if you only consider outside scholarships, then the local ones are the ones that give you the best chances
Pencil, do you know what various colleges are going to cost and what your parents are able to pay each year? That’s where you start. Then you can get an idea of what you are going to need to look for. You need to know if you qualify for need aid or not. If not you can look for merit scholarships from colleges. Each college will have a scholarships page you should read over. Once you find some colleges that you can go for, you can also look for outside scholarships. Scholarships in general are very competitive, who doesn’t want free money? There are always more applicants than funds.
Another thing I haven’t seen mentioned is you should apply early. Most universities will consider you for most of their university scholarships through your application, however, they typically have an early application date to be considered for those scholarships. Normally it ranges from the beginning of November through February 1 depending on the school. Don’t miss that date or you won’t be considered regardless how good of a student you are and that means having all the material to the admissions office by then.
Also pencil, when you ‘hear’ about these things, get the details, pin the person down and see if this is something real or just some misguided notion they have.
