How does one log volunteer hours?

So say you join a club that offers multiple volunteer opportunities. I want to volunteer just to get some hours and have something to do.

Do you have to log them yourself in your own time? If you do this then how would they ever believe that you actually completed these volunteer hours when college app time comes?

Your school should be logging them for you. You usually get some kind of sheet saying you’ve done x hours or the person or people running the event let your counselor/school know that you’ve done the time.

Make sure that you talk to the person or people in charge of the event (probably best to do this when the event is over)in order to know where or who to talk to in order to ensure that your hours make it to your school/counselor.

It depends on your school. My school did not log anything for us, and it was our responsibility to keep track of any volunteering and put it on our applications if we wanted to.

All extracurriculars are self-reported (colleges don’t try to verify them, unless maybe you’re claiming to have done something really remarkable), and college applications won’t ask you how many volunteer hours you have. You don’t need to worry about logging volunteer hours unless your school requires them for graduation.

Some schools track hours and have a sheet for your volunteer supervisor to fill out. A college won’t try to check. One thing that is a good idea is to start a spreadsheet of all your ECs, including volunteer hours, early in your high school years. Track every activity, award, etc. that might go on a college app. If you volunteer, put down how many hours. You will be really glad you have this when you are ready to fill out applications!

I’m already in my junior year, and I haven’t done much volunteer work in my freshman and sophomore year unforunately :(

I’m gonna try and do as much as I can this year. I’m not afraid of asking about volunteer hours, but it seems kind of weird to ask them and it seems like i’m just there for the hours.

Why do you feel obligated to do volunteer work (assuming it’s not required by your high school)? Your ECs can involve volunteering, but they don’t have to.

There’s nothing else I can think of right now. I don’t mind volunteer work to be honest with you. Plus, I barely have any EC’s from freshman to sophomore year. Outside of school, i do running and babysit my little brother. I just want to get some more EC’s this year since my grades are average at best and I have no good EC’s.
