How does one Network?

Excuse me for any lack of common knowledge about this subject. I'm just a senior in high school, but I wanted to ask this out of curiosity.

So i've heard the word, Networking, thrown around a lot as an answer to how one lands an internship/job with an investment bank. My current understanding of networking is that it is the process of getting to know people inside the banking field of work so that i suppose you'll be offered more interviews or other opportunities of some sort.

First of all, if i'm ignorant of something vital about networking based off what i said, could someone correct me?

Second, how does one go about networking. What strategies did those of you who networked use? I know that as a senior in high school, the need to do this isn't perhaps so near in my future yet, but i'd like to fully understand networking while I read some of the posts about investment banking.

Thank you so much for any information you can give me!

Networking is exactly what it sounds like - essentially you are meeting, speaking with and keeping in touch with current bankers, for example, that you might meet through information sessions, networking events, interviews, and alumni relationships (alumni that you reach out to at your college, that is).

In terms of doing it, there really is no hard rules - essentially just be professional, be yourself, ask questions of the professionals on the industry, their company, how they got in, tips, etc - of course, most important is to 1) not immediately try to send your resume, ask for an interview, or of course, ask for a job and, 2) don’t be too push - pace yourself with questions, follow up every so often but don’task 50 questions in an email - be courteous of the person’s time.

PM me if you have other questions.

Thank you so much!
