How does Penn view schools that don't rank?

I'm applying ED next fall. I know that Penn values rank pretty heavily, but my school doesn't rank at all. Even though I'm pretty sure I'm in the top 10%, its toward the lower end since I have a relatively low UW GPA (3.8), but a good W (4.39). This is still a lot lower then people who've gotten in to Penn in the past few years though, the average is UW 3.92, W 4.48.

So will Penn use the info from past applicants to rank me, or will they just base it off gpa? Or will they ignore rank completely?

Many high schools do not assign a class rank, and colleges realize this. Be high school profile will help a school see where you stand relative to others. Don’t worry about it- my son was in the top 10 of his class (by GPA)- no class rank was assigned- he’s attending WUSTL this fall.

To put class rank in perspective, of the freshmen who entered Penn in the fall of 2012, only 30% had submitted a high school class rank (see page 12 of the 2012-13 Common Data Set):

You may want to talk to your high school counselor about “ranking”. Often schools that don’t rank still provide enough statistical information to colleges so that admissions can readily figure out where they stand relative to their classmates. That statistical information may be the stats for the “bottom” of each decile, or some equivalent.

Admissions needs to place you somehow within your class, and I expect that they do with considerable accuracy.

If you have access to Naviance for your school, take a look at the stats of accepted students to Penn (or other colleges of interest to you). You’ll no doubt see a strong correlation between GPA + SAT/ACT and acceptance.
