How does Ross work?

Sorry if I seem stupid or ignorant for asking this, but I haven't been able to get a clear answer:

Do you apply to Ross as a high school Senior or as a Freshman at U of M?

I'm a rising Senior and I plan to go into International Business, but for undergrad, just plain business is fine if that is all a school has (International Business programs are very rare at these top schools, it seems). U of M is definitely towards the top of my list for business schools, but I can't figure out how to apply to Ross.

Would I apply straight to Ross this fall during the college process, or do I apply to U of M and then if I end up getting in and going there apply the following year internally for Ross?

Thank you in advance!

You can do it either way.

If you apply right after high school, you have to apply for the preferred admit program. However, it’s extremely competitive and about 1/5 to 1/4 of the entire Ross class gets in this way.

Otherwise, you can apply “regular,” which is freshman year of college. 3/4 to 4/5 of the class gets in this way, but it is still competitive (though not as much as preferred admission).

Here is the link to the 2010 profile for your info: http://www.bus.umich.edu/admissions/bba/BBAClassProfiles_2010.pdf

Thanks! How competitive is “competitive”? For instance, I have a 3.99 UW GPA, about a 4.85 weighted GPA, and a 2330 SAT, and I run a small business (SAT/ACT tutoring, etc). Would I stand at all of a shot at the preferred round or would it be better for me to save my energy and try the next year (that’s saying I get into U of M at all)?

If those are your stats (and I’m assuming you have other extracurriculars as well though even if you don’t it is still very strong), then U of M would most likely be a safe school for you.

I would apply preferred admission program, as your stats definitely match the preferred admit group. However, I can’t say that you will get in because sometimes the admissions can be pretty random (not saying that you will not get in here). GPA and ACT/SAT matter, but what really puts you over the top is what you do outside of school. I was preferred admit, and I can say that the group tends to have credentials that relate to at least some form of interest in business through prior experience (eg. prominent internships, business extracurriculars, run a business, leadership roles, etc.). Of course some people don’t have any of these and still get in.

I would definitely apply, and apply early action because rolling admissions gives you a higher chance of getting in (for preferred admission as well). I’m not sure what the essay prompt is but I would definitely relate your SAT/ACT business into it (essay is a large part as well which can put people over the top). Otherwise, I think you have a good shot, though not guaranteed, at getting in. What will end up determining it for you is your extracurriculars and essays.

As a note, if you don’t get in the first year, you can always reapply as a freshman. Preferred admission decision has nothing to do with it and won’t work against you.

Gosh, this website makes me think that any school at all is a high reach. Lol I always have to calm myself down and remember that just because everyone here has perfect stats that doesn’t mean I’m automatically out of the running for every school. It’s nice to hear that I have a chance at Ross, even if it isn’t a spectacular chance.

Is there restricted early action at U of M? I plan to apply ED to Wharton (Lol. There I do know my chances are extremely and utterly slim, but hey I might as well try). Would I be able to apply ED there and EA to U of M?

Yeah. You can do both. Michigan isn’t binding, just early action (you find out sometime in December, preferred admit about 2-4 months after that on average). One of the advantages of applying to Michigan.

And you have a decent, not slim, chance at Ross. I just said I couldn’t guarantee it because it’s still competitive for people with high stats.

Thanks for all the info! It will really help me out these next few months! :)

I was a PA too, and will say you have at least a 95% chance of getting in PA with those stats. Goldenglobe is trying to make it sound exclusive when it really isn’t.

@Recharge

I’m not trying to make it sound exclusive. In fact, I’m against the exclusive attitude that a lot of PA’s tend to have. I’m just saying to the OP that he or she can’t say with certainty that he or she will get in even though the OP’s stats match PA.

Thank you to both of you! I’ll hope for the best, but definitely be prepared for the worst because nowadays you never know with college admissions. :)
