I know that they do it unweighted for 10-12th grade, do they add GPAs or take the avg of them or what? I also heard that nonacademic classes don't count, so does that mean that the more academic classes you take, the higher the recalculated GPA will be?

Here's what you need to know:

Grades 10, 11, 12 ONLY
Academic Courses ONLY (as in, no PE)
A- = A = A+
Grades are not weighted based on Honors/AP/IB
on a 4.0 scale (I believe) - so an average

Cheers!

so they don't even care about how hard a person's courseload is?

Course difficulty is still a factor, but it doesn't weigh it into Stanford's GPA. Someone with a 3.9 and many AP, honor, or IB classes is probably more likely to get in than someone with a 4.0 and all regular classes, all other things being equal.

Yeah.. GPA isn't the only factor they look at.

"Look, this kid's got a measly 3.4. Let's accept another 4.0 instead"
"Yeah, but the first kid has been taking all APs since 3rd grade.."
"Who cares! We have to go with the bigger numbers!!!! 4 is greater than 3.4... REJECT!"

(is that really what you were thinking it was like?) :D

hey raven001, does that mean that if i get a B+ it's the same as B-, which is counted as 3.0? Or the same for all A-range grades?

i think this is the scale they use:

90-100: 4.0
80-89: 3.0
70-79: 2.0
60-69: don't bother applying

At my school, 86-100 is A. If i get 86, is that a B for stanford? or does stanford use my school's scale?

I'm 99.9999999999999% sure it's a B (or 3.0) for stanford.

If you get an 86% and your transcript says A, they can only use the A (4.0). If your transcript also includes the 86%, then who knows. At my school, teachers can use whatever scale they want to, as long as they send in a grade report with ABCDF.

Wow, they actually spend the time to recalculate everyone's GPA?

How much do they care about ur class rank? I hope they care more about weighted rank even if they use unweighted GPA

i think they value rank more than GPA, cuz a lot of people end up w/ 4.0s, and significantly different ranks. ranks tells them how you performed in context of your high school, which shows how competitive you are.

Fran95, if your school reports A's and B's, then you're in luck. I think you'll get the 4.0, but if they report percent grades (86 for example) then i'm almost positive you get the 3.0

what if my weighted rank is MUCH better than my unweighted rank?

(Unweighted rank is kinda overrated at my school because so many people who take easy classes always get straight A's)

Im ranked 39/862? do u think thats good enough?

Nana767, is anyone who is ranked higher than you applying to Stanford? I think that would hurt ur chances, otherwise you're prob fine.

i go to a new york city public school where im the only one applying.

i think you are okay.. thats a HUGE class, and you are well in the top ten percent.

I’m a junior and hoping to apply to Stanford this fall. My school doesn’t do ranking. How do you think they’ll evaluate my app?

If your school doesn’t rank, then it doesn’t rank. It will not affect the admission process. Other schools don’t rank, also. Some do, some don’t. I assume they will look more at your transcript/GPA. However, Stanford has a holistic review so everything is looked at with consideration.
