An applicant for the presidential scholarship needs..
High School GPA >/= 3.8
SAT CR + M >/= 1420
ACT >/= 32

Question 1: Does an applicant need both an ACT and SAT score in that range? My ACT score is a 32, but my SAT is not a 1420 (I was not planning on sending it). Is just the ACT enough, or do I also need the SAT?

Question 2: How does Temple evaluate a high school GPA. It states they only use core classes, which is fine, but how do they convert to a 4.0 scale? My school does it out of 100. Is it 90-100 = 4, 80-90 = 3, etc.? Or is it more complicated? And how is weighting affected, or is it even?

My son only took the ACT and got a scholarship so it looks like you probably only need one score. Not sure about how they convert GPAs since DS’s school uses the 4.0 scale.

hi, last year, you only needed one score, either SAT or ACT in their range. Temple only had my son’s SAT score so that’s how i know this. in looking at the sheet for this year, although the SAT score is higher, i don’t see any other eligibility changes so i’d still say only one is needed. i am not sure on your other question. My kid’s school was on a 100 point scale too and I could not figure out exactly how his GPA was calculated. plus his high school considerd a 90 a B+ so it was even more confusing for us. he did get the scholarship we expected him to get so our at home calculations were in the ballpark. i suggest applying as soon as possible if Temple is on your short list. that way, you’ll have your answer sooner and if you don’t like it, you have time to appeal it. also, if it would make you feel better, call the admissions office on the test question to confirm one test in the range is enough.

hi louisvillemom, the issue i found last year was every school was different. We had one school use i want to say a 3.3 for a B+ class, and a 90 was also not a 4.0; maybe a 90 was a 3.5. i can’t remember now and that school was not Temple.

plus with Temple, i never did found out exactly how they weighted classes. my son took physics, which his school weighted, but it was not honors, AP, etc. so i don;t know if Temple weighted it it or not. so there were some wrinkles with a 100 point scale. plus i think his unweighted grade in physics was either a 90 or 91, if temple did not weight that class, did they consider it an A since it was at least a 90 or a B+ which is what his high school noted on his transcript. his high school only put the unweighted grades on transcripts(along with a letter grade) but his high school calcuated the weighted grade in determining my son’s overall Gpa so i don;t know how the colleges used his transcript. the good news to all you prospects is that even with the wrinkles i noted, he still ended up with a pretty high college calculated GPA at all schools he applied to despite the differences among colleges. we estimated his GPA was somewhere between a 3.8 to 3.9(possibly even a 4.0 since his overall GPA was 96) and our calculations seemed to be at least in the ballpark. one college had him at a 3.94 and they had one of the more interesting scaling methods so i thought his GPA there would have ended up a lot lower.

overall gpa was 96/100 weighted. uw would be about the same as he only had one weighted class when we sent in transcript to Temple. his lowest unweighted grades for Temple’s core classes were physics and a math class, which were both around 90 or a 91. the rest of his core classes ranged from 92 to 99. he also had a 88 in a journalism class and I don;t know if Temple took that class into account or not. i;d say if your UW is 94.81, you should be in good shape. however, what are your lowest core classes and if they are under 90, are they honors, ib, or AP? if so, they should be weighted. again, i am not sure if Temple converts a 90 to a 4.0 or not and if not, what is the lowest score needed to be a 4.0 for a class. if i remember right, over 400 Temple freshman got the top scholarship at Temple. that tells me Temple is being flexible, to a student’s benefit, in calculating GPA’s. i also know from at least the kids my kid has met that other kids had a lot more weighted classes than he did. so odds are at least some of those kids had B’s in their weighted classes and Temple calculated those B’s as A’s in their GPA;s. again, this is just a guess. also, his Senior year, his honors chem grade was in the 80;s. to avoid any problems(assuiming that would cause a problem since it was over 90 weighted), we sent in his high school transcript before his first quarter senior year grades were on it. if you are having a great first grading period, no need to consider that but if not, consider getting your app in earlier than later. if you are having a great first grading period, you might want to wait to send in transcript so those grades are in on it.

<a href=“Profile - jamesjunkers - College Confidential Forums”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/profile/jamesjunkers and he really is enjoying Temple too. Temple houses many of the honors kids on the 3rd floor of one of the nicer dorms. that dorm is split out into 4 wings and he is already friends or at least on good terms with most or all the kids on his wing. his floor socially seems to breakdown by wings probably just because they see each other the most. he has 2 honors classes, which are smaller so he gets the benefit of some smaller classes and to meet more honors kids. The dorm situation seems to really fit him well and one of his classes is even in his dorm, which is also nice. the honors option at Temple seems to be a good fit for a lot of the kids. You are not required to live in that dorm, which is 1300 but a lot of honors kids do. Some have chosen to live in other dorms and seem to like where they are at to. You should be a shoe in for the honors program regardless of which scholarship you get.

For those who got scholarships, did your kid apply EA or rolling? My D is confused on which to pick - if she picks EA eill she still have until May 1 to accept? She emailed the adcom to ask but the reply was vague.

mine did not apply EA. i did not see benefit of doing so and he followed my advice(for once ;)) i think the answer to her question is yes; she still has to May 1st to commit to Temple, she may want to decide before then for dorm related issues though as dorms open up for picking a room and roommate around March 15th. if she is in scholarship range, odds of her getting accepted are great (which is why i did not see point in EA).
