I am heavily involved in music/orchestras; I have been a part of 3 different orchestras outside of school throughout high school, along with All State, county Honor Orchestra, being VP of Tri-M Music Honor Society, and orchestra summer camps. Does this mean each activity has to take up a different spot in the common application activity section? If so, what do I do if I run out of space for my other extracurriculars?

Not necessarily, the way i did it was to group it by type (I have a lot of ECs too). For example, I had: school music, non-school music, music awards/competitions (this included all state), school clubs, summer music camps, academic awards/activities, dance, and volunteer

guineagirl96- So each group took up 1 spot?

Yes. They give you 10 spots i believe. I’ll give you more detail on what i put for Activity 1
School Music: symphonic band 2 years principal oboe, wind ensemble 2 years co-principal oboe/principal EH (performed at national festival), full orchestra co-principal 2 years, curricular jazz (on piano) 2 years, 8th period jazz 4 years (on piano), pit for musical, show choir 1 year, service choir 2 years.
That’s not exactly what I wrote, but you get the idea

Also on this note, if I have medals in Scioly do I put that under activity or awards, I’d prefer to keep it under activity to save space for more important awards, if not I’d probably not mention Scioly. Same question for fbla awards

you’ll need to map out your plan ahead of time. There is no “awards” section really. I just made my own, I believe.

Wait really? Isn’t there a part for 5 most important awards/achievements or whatever?

guineagirl96- Alright then, thanks so much!

theanaconda- Yeah I thought there was an awards section as well

A note: if you do group the music, you can use Addl Info to give each its own line. Short detail, only what’s relevant. On the EC page, there has been a cutoff, after so many characters. Try to get a copy of the last Common App, to see what you’ll deal with. You’ll want to stand back and see how to use that page to best present yourself.

Science Olympiad
5th place ***** 2014 states
6th place ******** 2013 states
- regional gold medals
On school a team for regionals since freshman year
That’ll fit within the character limit right?

Math team might be troublesome for me to fit lol especially as I’m captain and would like to describe my work as captain, maybe I’ll burn some of my 5 awards lines to describe them. Do the awards have a character limit? I want to group all my math team nysml and arml results together.

@theanaconda There are no award spots (i just opened up my app from last year). You have 10 activity spots where they ask you: the type, position/leadership, grade levels participated, timing, hours, and details. The details section (this is where you list awards and honors) has a cap of around 140 characters.

This is what my kid did. Her activity happened to be Quiz Bowl where she had a lot of stuff to list. She put the activity in the activity section, then said “See additional information” in the description. Then in the Add’l Info section she put something like:

Quiz Bowl:
- State tournament participant, 4 years. Individual state placement: 9th - 45, 10th - 20, 11th - 9, 12th - 2.
- First place individual in SnoCat tournament - 12th, 2nd place in Rosewood Tournament - 12th
- Attended ACE Quiz Bowl Camp - Summer after 10th, 11th
- Team captain - 11th, 12th
- State History Bowl - 11th - 4th place individual finish
- Specialty areas: Literature, World History, Biology

I think this approach makes your application more readable. And the colleges don’t really care what section you put things in as long as you are concise, clear, and your information (awards, etc.) get listed somewhere.

@guineagirl96 so do I put my awards as another category? thanks for the help
