I just checked my admission decision to find that I have been waitlisted into the program I’d like to attend for. I accepted my spot on the waitlist, but it says that the deadline to click on that link to save your spot is May 1st, which is the decision deadline for the other colleges I’ve been accepted to. It says I will be notified of my status by June 15th, but do people find out earlier than that? I am just worried because I don’t want to run the risk of not getting financial aid and being stuck going to a $60k/year school! Should I contact admissions and ask them these questions instead?

Also, would it be unacceptable to ask why I was placed on the waitlist?

Thank you so much for your opinions!

You’re on the wait list usually because you’re good enough to be admitted, and they’d take you, but spots are full and there were some people who they thought were better/more qualified, but wait list game becomes 100% about interest and determination - meaning “if we take you off the wait list…will you really attend?”

You should pay the deposit for another university and assume you’re not getting off the wait list. Then, stay on the wait list and they’ll notify you usually within a couple weeks after May (June 15 tends to be just a legality date, they reply usually soon). If you get accepted and you want to attend BU, then you won’t get the deposit you paid the first school back (I think) but you can enroll at BU.

After you’ve figured out what you’re going to do /where you’ve been accepted, and you want to still go to BU and stay on the wait list, send BU a letter of continued interest and perhaps additional work samples, 1 more letter of recommendation, and an update on your recent academic and extracurricular performance. Maintain a sense of “I really want to go to BU”
