Actually, unless there has been a major change in the common app, you can (and probably should) customize your essay for each college. After you submit your first one, you can have up to 8 more different versions. My D changed her essay slightly to personalize it for the schools that she thought it would matter for. Other schools got a standard essay.
Usually, you cannot resubmit your application if you get rejected for ED, but you can always send a letter with additional information in it.

Last year’s common app you could not change anything on your application (on the non secondary part) including test scores, information, etc. after you submit it to your first common app school. So, I don’t think you can customize the standard essay to every college. You can customize it for the secondary essays. This is assuming the common app has not changed this year in this regard.

OP should explore the “alternative versions” option of Common App. I’m not familiar enough to give proper advice but I do believe it might be useful for you

Like Twoparent said I recall reading that you can have different versions of the common application and then send which one where.I dont remember the exact details. But I guess to really find out we have to wait for the common application to officially come out.
But on that note has anyone from the past remember having different versions of the common application and therefore sending certain colleges certain information,( like if one school has score choice and some dont so you only report things that would make you the best candidate you can be), including different versions of the essay?

My experience with the commonapp was in 2009 - you could change the essay and additional information. Not anything else! But this was before score choice.
You used the alternative versions option. You had to send one version off first before you could start changing it.
Of course, they might have changed it for next year. In 2006, my S was able to customize his essays too in the commonapp.

Ignore all of my previous posts!! I just briefly looked at the common app preview and the essay states that alternative versions will not be allowed. Of course, the common app tried to do this in other years and there was such a backlash that they ended up changing it back eventually.
