How does the Common App sending mechanism work?

How does the Common App sending mechanism work? That is, if I send the 500 Common App essay to college X, will it also be sent to another college using common app? I want to ask this because I want to change the 500 word essays for different colleges because it matches my positioning effort. Is this really possible?

<p>You can choose which schools it is sent to as you submit it, but technically you’re not supposed to change your personal statement for each college</p>

<p>It is possible to save different versions of your app for different schools, although that is not at all the norm. Schools do not expect the main essay to be tailored to their institution. After you send to one school, you can create alternate versions and vary your essay for other schools. Look in the faq of the common app site for details on how to do this.</p>
