How does the mail work in a dorm?

Does everyone get their own box? Is it locked? How are packages handled? How long does it usually take to received a package after it gets on campus?

One box per room. Yes. Package slip in box, pick up at the desk. Usually same day.

Do the residence halls have a "post office" inside each? I mean a place where you can have packages weighed and sent out and also a place to buy stamps. If not, is one usually nearby?

No. There's a UPS in the union if you're on central though.

Is there a special "In campus" postage rate? For example, if I send a letter from my mailbox to someone in another hall or in an office, do they sort it on campus so that it doesn't mingle with the mail of the rest of Ann Arbor and thus doesn't require a first class 39 cent stamp. I just remember seeing in my M-planner, there is a comment card and in the corner for the stamp it said something like prepaid postage, special campus mail.

i just ordered a book online and chances are that it might not arrive in time before i leave. i was wondering how my parents could ship me the book and how i could receive the book. i'll be living in west quad.

Can't they just mail it to your room?

yea, as chinaismine is saying can't I just order stuff online and have it sent to my dorm?

What happens is when UPS or whoever delivers your package to the dorm, the package is then left at the desk and someone writes a note to you and puts it in your mail box saying that you have a package and you can pick it up at the desk. If you never check your mail box, then you'll never get your package.

One other thing, you use your whole address not just your name and dorm, here is an example:

Joe Smith
197 Hayden House
East Quadrangle
701 East University
Ann Arbor, Mi 48109-1245

Your package will magically arrive. :D

okay at least this is how it works in south quad once the year gets going, its WAYYY busy right now so i think things might be a LIL different for now, but for the most part...

if the package comes UPS or USPS it goes to the west side mail desk and a slip is put in your mailbox to let you know. Bring the slip during mail desk hours, get your package. FedEx, perishable goods, and DHL (i dunno if anything else...) go to the East Desk and you are notified via email to your umich email account. If a package that is sent to west mail desk isnt picked up within a week, its moved to the east side and you are sent an email. MAKE SURE TO CHECK YOUR MAIL BOXES FREQUENTLY!

Is anyone forwarding their mail to their dorm for the school year? Or will you just let it stay at home and get it another way?

While my Daughter does not go to UM, I can tell you what we did. She did not have her mail forwarded. You are only there nine months, then next year, you'll probably have a different address. I keep all her mail here (magazines, bills, etc. Credit card apps are automatically shredded.) Then once a month, I mail her a big envelope of everything.

To be honest, about all she really cares about are her magazines. Credit card bills and bank statements are handled online.
