How does the parent plus loan approval process work?

Hi everyone,
I am going to SUNY Albany this year as an incoming freshman, and my mom wants to take out a plus loan for me. I am extremely confused on the approval process though. She did the application back in April and was approved, but recently she has gone into forbearance for her federal student loans. She already did the MPN, and I am very confused on whether or not we will get the loan. My schools financial aid office is really not much help on ANYTHING, so that is why I’m asking you guys here on CC. Thank you for your help!

Are there any NYS colleges you can commute to? It sounds like your family is eligible for the Excelsior Grant. You should take advantage of it if you can.

I’m sure my answer is not what you want to hear.

Your mom is having difficulty with her own student college loans. Please, please don’t put her in the position of having to take additional loans in her name. Please find an affordable option.

The credit check is good for 180 days. They do not check the credit again on a loan that was already approved, so she will be able to get the loan based on the April credit check. Here is information on the things that will lead to a PLUS denial: https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/sites/default/files/plus-adverse-credit.pdf .

Did she apply for the PLUS loan online? Make sure your school processes the online PLUS requests - many schools actually require a paper request form from parents for the PLUS loan. She can actually see if your school has originated a PLUS loan for her already by going to nslds.ed.gov & signing in with her FSA ID.

My mom got the loan but i dont want to use it. Im having an issue with my aid right now and the school is snail slow at trying to fix it. With how much i have to pay without my aid being fixed, i need some kind of loan or i wont be able to attend. Im already all set to go to this college and my parents really want me to go so i dont really have a choice. My other option is to go to a community college up north a little bit but i would have to live on campus there as well. Its a little cheaper to live on campus there though. Im very frustrated with the financial aid office at Albany. With how long they take to process aid and how little they actually gave me when i couldve gone to a private school for pretty much the same price, its making me feel like theres no point in going.

Why do you have to live on campus at a NYS cc? Aren’t there any SUNYs you can commute to from home?

The reason I would have to live on campus is because I don’t have a car and it is too far for me to drive to every day even if I did have a car. Nearby the only SUNY I could commute to every day is SUNY Albany, but even then I would have to take a bus every day and I possibly wouldn’t be able to get home if I stayed late.

Plus my parents are forcing me to stay on campus, something I DONT want to do. They say it’ll be “good for me”.

How much do you have to borrow per year to dorm at Albany?
