For an entering freshman in the fall, I just wanted some input about this tentative schedule...
Bio 1B
Chem 1A
Math 16A
and some elective

Thanks a lot

Thanks a lot

It would be nice if you gave us some back ground. For example have you taken AP Bio, Chem or Calculus.

Yea i have taken AP bio (got a 5) AP chem (4) and am currently taking a college math course called 150-151 which is pretty much AB and BC (derivatives, integration etc…)
So those classes should be mainly review right ?

I wouldn’t say easy review, but it seems like you can handle the schedule.

k thanks a lot =]

Another question…
So i was just wondering why does Bio 1A have chem 3A or 112A as a prerequisite while Bio 1B does not have any ? I looked at the lecture’s outlines on webcast for both of them and 1A looks pretty much like AP bio while 1B is… just different.
Also is math 1A really that bad ?? from some reviews of the teacher, Christ, it didnt sound all that bad…
Finally what would you suggest i take between chem 1A, chem 3A and chem 1b ? and does anyone know about neuroscience c129 or psych 1 ?
thanks a lot =]

yeah. math 1a is a weeder course, if you’ve taken math in cc, it’s a joke. psych 1 is a joke too, just ap psych all over again. chem 1a is gen chem, chem 3a is ochem but you don’t need to know gen chem for it. if you’re not premed, you can start with chem3a.

So would you recommend me to take math 53 instead of 1A ?

Dude you’re asking for some killer lab times lol (8 hours total…and that’s 4 in a row for each…whee)

Chem 1a is kind of a joke. But don’t underestimate the class…they’ll get you with the middies and the final. (Though the fall teachers at least seem like they want you to pass the class) But I got a B because of the damn final…hulk mad!!!

Fall Bio1b I heard isn’t as good as the spring semester, but I’m taking it right now and I can say that it’s complicating concepts that are simple, which makes everything frustrating, especially labs (but I guess that would depend on your GSI).

Math 1a I think you have to realize that it isn’t exactly like AB…at least not my teacher. With my teacher, all we ever did was proofs. Proofs, proofs, proofs. And the test: proofs. Hence, I did pretty badly. lol. But everyone always tells me 1a is so easy and 1b is the hard part, but I’m doing much better in 1b than 1a. =

If you remember a lot from Chem, then I might consider skipping chem 1a, but just to get a general feel of class, I might just take it. 3A is interesting, but definitely more difficult.

Personally, I think you just have to realize that this is not high school anymore, and coming to such a huge university means less attention from teachers and such.

your first semester? take math 1a. or 1b. don’t go into 53. I did 1b my first semester

what major are you?

biochem as of now.
Does anyone know if i can take bio 1A in the fall, since there is no lab involved in that class ? that would lighten my workload.
I’m not taking calc AB as of right now, i’m taking this college math course called math 150-151 and the subjects we are learning seem pretty similiar to what is taught in 1A.
I do realize that this isn’t high school and i was never expecting a lot of attention from my teachers in the first place anyway lol

Thank you for the information =]

You won’t get into a Bio 1B lab for Fall, they will all get full before your CalSO most likely.

It appears Mishler isn’t teaching Bio 1B anymore
http://ib.berkeley.edu/student/grad/forms/GSIproj09.pdf

Note the TBA and the lack of Mishler for Bio 1B on the OSOC

Bio 1A has a lab, Bio 1AL. Bio 1A/L requires Chem 3A, which you don’t have.

what do you recommend I do then ? Should I just wait to take bio 1b or 1a later ? Which one is the best for an entering freshman that took AP bio ? I would say 1A because, again, the material seems similar.

yes wait tho take those later. Are you double majoring or something? there’s plenty of time to wait it out :-)

You can take Bio 1B in fall, your lab section options will just be very limited, making it hard to enroll in a section that doesn’t conflict with other classes.

1A is not good for an incoming freshman, in fact they even restrict freshmen from enrolling in Bio 1A/L.

Both Bio 1A/L and 1B expand greatly from Bio AP.

Also, you do not qualify for Bio 1A/L, you haven’t take Chem 3A.

Do i need to take both bio 1A and 1B to fulfill my major requirement ? (biochem or immunology)

yea you need both

What class would you recommend I take to fulfill the second half of my reading and composition requirement ?

And does the CNR college not have a 7 breadth requirement like the college L&S ? oO
