How does this schedule look?

Freshman Mathematics Major for Fall 2011-

BIOL 111 4 credits Prof: Wei Wan
ECON 203 3 credits Prof: Jeffrey Edwardson
MATH 151 4 credits Prof: Philip Yasskin
MATH 170 1 credit Prof: Michael Stecher
POLS 206 3 credits Prof: Jon Bond

It would be greatly appreciated to know how some of these classes and professors are from people who are already A&M students and have first hand knowledge about them.

Thanks :D

I don’t know any of these professors, but I highly recommend MyEdu for professor ratings and schedule organizers, great site haha

If you can try and get Amy Austin for math. If not it isn’t too big of a deal since there will be her videos online, weekly review sessions, and she’ll probably be the author of the common exam. I’ve heard mixed reviews about Wei Wan, my sisters boyfriend hated him/her and my roommate for this coming year didn’t have a problem with them. All of the other profs I don’t really know.

Unless you’re dead set on taking POLS I would simply skip taking that and try and add some sort of KINE or other kind of required class. It is so easy to take for example a winter minimester at Blinn online to get credit for this class. Just my opinion though.

Hey, we’re in the same Pols class I think! Do you have it at 3:40-5:10ish? Because Professor Bond only teaches 2 sections lol. I’m a Sophomore though (I took Pols 207 first because I was going to test out of Pols 206, but I think it will be an easy GPA booster).

Anyway, from what people have told me about Pols 206 with Bond, he only gives out two exams + a final (total of 3 multiple choice exams for the course). No homework, no quizzes. So you have to do really well on the exams. The first exam is worth around 55 points. The next is worth a little more, and the final is worth the most. Final is NOT cumulative, though. There are bonus questions on exams to help your grade. His point system adds up to 200 points (180 out of 200 = an A, for example). So if you like that kind of grading system, keep him (:

I don’t know anything else about the other profs, but I would personally take Pols 206 at A&M instead of Blinn because it’s one of those core classes that can help your GPA. I mean, unless you’re simply bad at government and politics, then take it elsewhere for credit. Just my two-cents. Good luck!

Yasskin is not bad for Math. Not the best, but not bad.

If you do not appreciate or want to learn theory, then Amy Austin is a great professor for Math that you may want to try and get. If you want to know why you are doing what you are doing, then seek elsewhere. The fact that she has only a Master’s degree shows in her teaching, and from my viewpoint I would not recommend her. Also can’t exactly count on her to author the common exam, she did not for the 152 course last semester.

Thanks for the input guys! And yeah, sandrabui, i believe we might be in the same class for pols :D. because mine is the 3:55-5:10. And yeah, I was actually thinking of taking pols 206 somewhere else like a community college next summer but i’m still not totally sure because i’m wondering if it could be a gpa booster since it is a core class. hopefully it is. how difficult is it to change classes in your schedule during or before the week classes start?

I personally had Wei Wan for BIOL 111. I think she’s alright. Some of the other students didn’t like her that much because she was Asian, and so she had an accent, and so they claimed they couldn’t understand her that well (personally, I understood her perfectly well). The one good thing that she does is she assigns clicker points. When you were buying your textbooks, you probably had to buy a clicker, and Wan uses it. Basically what she does is as she’s going through the lecture, she’ll randomly stop and post a couple of questions which you answer using your clicker. Get it right, get 1 point. Get it wrong, nothing happens. You can earn up to 30 clicker points and she’ll add those 30 points straight to your grade.

For the exams, I strongly recommend A+. Some of the questions from the A+ material even show up on her exams, so it’s kind of like a freebee (I think that’s how it’s spelled).

Sorry I couldn’t help on the other professors.

Dr. Yasskin!! I took him for Cal II and III and he was great! I don’t know why everyone else is saying Austin was better! Although, realize that you are taking the engineering version of the course; there will be more emphasis on applications, real-world problems, and computer programming (Dr. Yasskin loves Maple), and no proofs or heavy theoretical stuff.

You should realize before going in that POLS and BIOL are huge, impersonal classes. There will likely be 300 other students in the class too, the prof will lecture off the powerpoints, and tests will be multiple choice. These would be good candidates to try to test out of or take at blinn if you are so inclined.

Amy Austin is the best math teacher period.
